I really enjoyed this entire series - I read it back to back, and each book does read like a smaller episodic chapter in a larger book. Hiccup must make his claim to be King, and do what he can to find a peaceful end to the Dragon Rebellion.

It is always hard to end a series that has gone so far so well. No specific power of the dragon jewel can be as terrifying as the hypothetical unknown power. No resolution to the battle can be as satisfying as the dream of what the resolution might be. The dragons sneak away to story and the corners of the world, and promise to come back when we have made the world a better place.

(But oh! Fishlegs finds his much searched for father!)

And we learn that it is not the things we have, but the lessons we learn on the journey to find the things. Fear and intimidation are not the best way. Sometimes second best is best. Sometimes freedom must be fought for. When you fight for your friend, you are also fighting for yourself. Love never dies. You must make things right in the old world before you go looking for the new; sometimes the things you are looking for are right at home. Accidents happen for a reason. Power can corrupt. You have to keep on trying even though you are beaten before you start. You need to know what it is to be a slave before you can be a King. ( )

A satisfyingly triumphant yet bittersweet conclusion to the How to Train Your Dragon series, once more brilliantly read by David Tennant. Will Hiccup become king? Will the dragon war end? How will Hiccup save the dragons??

This review is also available on my blog, Read Till Dawn.

Oh, man. How can this series be over? When I started it, just a year or two ago, there seemed to be a million of these books. And even though they were geared at kids almost half my age, I still gobbled them up by the handful - they were fun and silly at first, full of naughty dragons and crazy escapades. Then somewhere along the line I realized that I actually did care about Hiccup and Toothless and Fishlegs and all the rest - not just because they provided an escape from my world, but because they were legitimately compelling characters. The next thing I knew things were escalating, falling into place and then back out as Hiccup discovered the random adventures he'd been on had all led him to the items he would need to claim a throne he'd never even realized he was the heir to. And then the villain snatched the items away, and a giant dragon with a bitter, burning desire for revenge against the humans enslaved everyone Hiccup knew, and Hiccup was left on the run. And now here he is one last time, starting in dead last one final time as he fights to gain the throne and negotiate a peace that would mean the survival of both the humans and the dragons, despite the terrible war raging between the two species. A seemingly impossible goal, true, but then Hiccup has been in many impossible places before.

I truly loved every minute of watching him navigate his way through this one. Through all twelve books, Cressida Cowell's writing has never once dropped in quality, and I believe (though I haven't read it in a while) that the first How to Train Your Dragon book was no huge leap greater than this twelfth installment. How does she do it? I have no idea - but I wish all authors could be as consistent as she is!

There isn't really anything for me to say, besides that the quality is as high as ever and it's a fulfilling (if rather tear-wrenching) ending to a wonderful series. If you have read the first eleven How to Train Your Dragon books, then you're really not going to wait for my encouragement to read the twelfth. And if you haven't read any of these books, then what on earth are you doing reading this review?! Leave this page right now and go check out the first book in the series, How to Train Your Dragon. I know you won't be disappointed. ( )

The twelfth and final book in the How TO Train Your Dragon series completes the story of Hiccup's journey of becoming a hero the hard way. It is said that a sword is stronger with harder testing (plunging the sword in fire and water and testing its abilities). A hero is much the same. Hiccup the hero was forged through dragon fire. As the world he loves is falling apart around him, he gets up and faces it square in the eye. Alvin has the king's lost things (or does he really?) and the dragon Furious and the Red-Rage are waiting off the shores of Tomorrow. Hiccup, meanwhile, is stranded at Hero's End, with only the Woden's Fang for company, and absolutely no memory of who he is or what he needs to do, surrounded by sandsharks (not your ordinary sandsharks. Dragons that swim through the sand.) who are all trying to kill him while a vampire spydragon is also trying to kill him at the same time. Hiccup, despite all odds, manages to travel through the Red-Rage dragons on a sinking rowboat, get past the human and dragon guards of tomorrow, become the next King of the Wilderwest while stopping Alvin the Treacherous from becoming king at the same time, then flies away from Tomorrow to end the dragon rebellion, creating peace between dragons and humans, and devising a plan to save all dragons. How is this possible? Read on to find out. ( )
