Of course, this catches the attention of a higher power, and Sam's pulled from the only world he knows to become an apprentice to the King's Wizard, Morgan of Shadows. When Sam's fourteen, he enters the Dark Woods and returns with Gary, the hornless gay unicorn, and a half-giant named Tiggy, earning the moniker Sam of Wilds. At fifteen, Sam learns what love truly is when a new knight arrives at the castleâKnight Ryan Foxheart, the dreamiest dream to have ever been dreamed. Naturally, it all goes to hell when Ryan dates the reprehensible Prince Justin, Sam can't control his magic, a sexually aggressive dragon kidnaps the prince, and the King sends them on an epic quest to save Ryan's boyfriend, all while Sam falls more in love with someone he can never have. I had an awesome time listening to this book - the characters were so much fun! It was ridiculous, over the top, and kind of half-serious/half-parody fantasy, and usually I'm not a fan of that kind of humor, but in this case I enjoyed the heck out of it. I listened to it mostly in public, and I can't count the number of times I burst out laughing in the middle of a crowd. I'm getting used to the weird looks.

That said, I don't think I would have liked it so much had I just read the book, or had the narrator not been Michael Lesley.

I used to think I'm not a fan of TJ Klune. I could read his books when the right mood struck, but 95% of the time it was too much angst or too OTT for me - but this year I discovered I love his books when I listen to them. I can say with certainty that had I read this book, I would have probably DNFed it, so I'm really glad I chose to listen to it instead.

And Michael Lesley - that man is a narration god! I don't think I've ever listened to a better overall narration. Granted, my experience with audiobooks is humble, but judging by all the other audio reviews, the awesomeness of this narration is pretty much a fact. ( )

Holy mother of pearl. This book was beyond amazing!!! It was so damn funny and clever. Sam has a mouth that never quits, and I loved every minute of it. Gary and Tiggy, his best friends, are completely amazeballs, and I really want my own gay unicorn that snorts sparkles and half-giant that smashes everything. There was a ton of UST, but finally Sam and Ryan got their head out of their ass. I loved how there was no cheating, and that everything worked out the way it should have. I can't wait for more of these characters. TJ Klune is so damn brilliant. Continues to blow me out of the water with his wit and talent.

As for the audiobook, Michael Lesley is SOOOOOOO good. This book is great to listen to. Lots of laugh out loud moments, and Michael made the voices perfect. It really gave a depth to the story that you don't get from the written words. ( )

Series Info/Source: This is the first book in the Tales from Verania series. I got this as an audiobook from Audible.com.

Audiobook Quality (5/5): The narrator for this book was perfect and did an amazing job reading it. This was soooo good as an audiobook.

Story (5/5): This is a goofy, hilarious and heartfelt story with a ton of zany characters. I laughed so incredibly hard throughout this book and it was highly entertaining. It’s mainly a fantasy adventure/quest sort of book with a lot of detours. Just beaware that this is definitely an adult book with a absolute ton of sex jokes in it and some explicit male/male sex scenes. There are also some rather interesting implied dragon/unicorn sex scenes...and that should tell you a lot about the tone of the story right there.

Characters (5/5): The characters are a big part of what makes this book work; they are all borderline crazy and it is hilarious. I really enjoyed how nice and caring everyone was to each other even though they are put into a lot of crazy situations and the characters are very diverse. These characters somehow all pull off being crude, over-sexed, hilarious, and heartwarming all at once...I know...it’s hard to explain.

Setting (5/5): This is a very typical fantasy setting and its absolute typicalness is approached in a very tongue in cheek sort of fashion. It worked very well for the story, although I think this story could have been set in a different world and still had the same impact.

Writing Style (5/5): I will start by saying that this is very, very different in writing style from “The House in the Cerulean Sea”. This is a much more snappy, tongue in cheek story, with a ton of sexual humor. However, the amazingly complex and caring characters are well done in both books. This was just so well done. The laughs never stop, but there’s a good story, good character development and I loved every bit of it. I am so much looking forward to reading more books by Klune.

My Summary (5/5): Overall I adored this book. It provided much needed laughs and entertainment while still providing some food for thought as well. I really loved it and would recommend to those who enjoy humor fantasy and don’t mind a lot of sex jokes and a lot of male/male relationship discussion/action. ( )

Totally not a writing style I'm used to -and worth sticking with for being hysterically funny. ( )

4 out of 5.

Gay romance as farce. So that's a thing, I guess? This book actually took me two tries; the first time I got through the first chapter and decided that it was way too silly for me. I came back to it after reading a couple of really excellent books by T.J. Klune ([b:Wolfsong|29233804|Wolfsong (Green Creek, #1)|T.J. Klune|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1463862865s/29233804.jpg|49474397] and [b:Bear, Otter, and the Kid|12156759|Bear, Otter, and the Kid (Bear, Otter, and the Kid, #1)|T.J. Klune|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1347434774s/12156759.jpg|17127576]), willing to give it another chance. I'm glad I did, but it still took a couple of chapters to really get into it.

You're familiar with breaking the fourth wall? This book breaks the fourth wall, shatters it into a billion pieces, and tap-dances on the dust that remains. And yet underneath it all is a good story, even if it is written so broadly it's difficult to see at times. I enjoyed it enough that I will definitely be picking up the sequel.

And good lord T.J., you outlined the rest of the whole series on the last page of the book. That's pretty damned impressive!

Update on 23 July 2017: I finished listening to the audiobook version and I have upgraded my review from 4 to 5. I want to have Michael Lesley's babies :) I have never heard a better performer of an audiobook, and some of the techniques used (the high-pitched voice of the Faerie King, multi-tracking used in crowd scenes) were simply amazing. I liked the book going in, I loved it when I was done. Lesley brings out nuances in the story that I had missed the first time through. I now want to hunt down other books that he has performed! ( )
