I loved it start to finish and only paused it briefly to recover in the middle when it tried to rip my heart out... I will say no more for fear of spoilers, but I cannot recommend this story enough! I love, love, loved this book. It was magical, snowy, scary at times. Stop reading this review and read The Wolf Wilder. Immediately! I enjoyed this. It wasn't quite the book I expected it to be though - I think I wanted more wolves, and less Russian Revolution and Cruel Soldiers. Feo's life is turned upside down when soldiers burn her home and capture her mother (because they release wolves back into the wild) and so she fights at the head of her own children's revolution to kill the bad guy and free her mum. Probably one to be careful of at the bottom of the age range, what with the houses being burned down, and wolves being killed, and (ok, the bad guy!) being torn to pieces by wolves. Feodora and her mother, Marina live in the bitterly cold Russian wilderness with wolves. They are known as wolf wilders, whose job it is to teach “domesticated” wolves, formerly kept as pets by the rich, how to be wild again. When the mean, wolf-hating General Rakov burns their house and captures her mother, Feo sets off with her three half-wild wolves and a newborn wolf pup in the brutal cold to St. Petersburg to try to rescue her. She, as well as the wolves, must learn to trust strangers, including Ilya, a former soldier, offering help in order to survive. There is a rawness, a visceral honesty and heart in this tween novel that grabs you and keeps you on the edge of your chair. This is another winner by the author of "Rooftoppers" and "Cartwheeling in Thunderstorms".
