Fiction. Romance. HTML:

Bestselling historical romance author Sherry Thomas branches out with her first contemporary romance about a chance meeting a lifetime in the making, and an all-consuming affair without a single predictable moment.

When Evangeline Canterbury meets the gorgeous, intriguing doctor next door, all she wants from him is a bit of distraction, to help her get over a few rough days.

Her one-night stand, however, has other plans: He needs an accomplished and presentable girlfriend to bring before his parents??and for six months of her time, he is willing and prepared to spend an obscene amount of money.

Nothing but trouble can come of such an arrangement. But can Eva stop herself? Or will she fall headlong in love with a man who will leave her when their contract expires with a smile, a check, and hardly a backward glance?… (lisätietoja)

SCREAMING! Bennett’s great-great-grandparents are Lord and Lady Tremaine from Private Arrangements!!

I don’t even know what to say about The One In My Heart - Thomas’s only contemporary. First person POV and a bit bonkers, I was hooked by the opening chapter. Each successive chapter had a “wait WTF??” moment (or moments). This kind of reminded me of a category romance - and I mean that as a compliment!

The One In My Heart is told through Eva’s POV and is about Bennett, a Silicon Valley gabillionaire alpha-hole (he’s also a surgeon with a god complex) fake dating Eva, a really smart STEM-y heiress he stood up at some European ball over a decade ago (for a much older woman). Bennet is kind of obsessed with Eva and also wants her to fake date him (and fuck) so he can get reconnected with his family after they disinherited him over the relationship with the older woman and his being - overall - kind of a douche.

Got it? If that kind of contemporary story appeals to you, you might enjoy this (I did but I’m still kind of like wtf). The writing didn’t stun me like the historicals I’ve read by Thomas, but there are descriptions of food that only Sherry Thomas is capable of writing so beautifully (and deliciously.)

CWs for BPD, depression, underage relationship (past), car accident resulting in death of parent

I debated between 3 and 4 stars. I enjoyed Ms. Thomas' first try at contemporary. Like her historicals it was well written. It was angsty of course. The writing was poignant and sweet. I loved the dialog between the hero and the heroine. The hero was like the perfect man that all women secretly want. He was all about giving the heroine whatever she needed. He was pretty much scheming from the first to do whatever it took to get her. Still, and this is where the debate comes in. He had had a very serious relationship when he was a very young man with a much older woman. The entire book goes into such detail that that relationship seemed very real and important and honestly not really over. I know the other woman was dead but the hero pretty much admits that had she not broken up with him (several years before she died) he would still be with her. Somehow, the way it was written took away something from the hero's feelings for the heroine. The book also seemed to lose something at the end. The breakup seemed somehow contrived and unnecessary. And I winced a bit at the heroine's actions. I don't like my heroine to embarrass herself like that especially at the end of the book. And the eventual reunion scene lacked a whole lot of something. It felt like a sort of let down after all the lovely conversations the two had had throughout the book to basically have no dialog between them to wrap things up. So first half of the book 5 stars last 3rd of the book 3 stars I'll give it a 4. Another thing is that there was a description of a photo display of the hero as a young man taken by the other woman who was a famous photographer. The descriptions of the photos were so clear you could see them in your mind and I would really like to see them in real life. That is some amazing writing right there. ( )

Filled with interesting characters who generally behave like adults. A little too socially hoity-toity and moneyed for my tastes in a contemporary romance, but well written. Somersets are descendents of the characters in Thomas' Private Arrangements! ( )

Sherry Thomas doesn't gloss over the hard parts of relationships. She doesn't pretend that love is less legitimate if it isn't the first. Her characters are nuanced – the emotionally closed off father can still be loveable, it’s not all or nothing, but there are impacts. Working out your baggage is the central theme in this contemporary story, set in modern Manhattan, with protagonists in their early 30s.
What I didn't like about the book, may be the problem I have with contemporaries in general. Based in a world I recognize, I expect to identify a bit more. And these folks, millionaires that they are, with their society page lives and witty banter, don't look like anyone I know. Also, Bennett was so strategic and, Evangeline so skittish that they were almost hard to believe. There were many internal conversations on page that I couldn’t follow, they didn’t make sense. Their relationship logic was so strategic that it didn’t add up for me.
Still, a fun read and a great author. ( )

Well, peeps. How many of you glanced at the cover and the synopsis and dismissed this book as describing one of the most used tropes in romance genre? Yeah, right. If I wasn't a long-standing fan of Sherry Thomas, starting from her historicals and ending by her incredibly well put together young adult fantasy fiction series, I would have gleefully walked by.

Well, don't. Thomas's new venture into contemporary romance was just as successful as Milan's latest, Trade Me. The more I read her, the more I realise that this woman can not do anything wrong in my book.

The One in My Heart starts like a trope but it turns everything you know and expect upside down. The character development is exquisite, the family ties are strong and healthy, the dialogues between primary or secondary characters both, are to die for.

Bennett and Evangeline meet by chance on a rainy night while Evangeline wanders around thinking about her beloved stepmother with her mental illness. She is emotionally vulnerable, and Bennett, barely an acquaintance fits the bill for a beautiful stranger whom she wants to forget her woes with for one night. She comes up for a slice of tiramisu and stays for a delicious sexual encounter.

Months later they meet again, and this time he has an offer for a successful, talented professor with a highly esteemed family connections. He wants to reconcile with his estranged parents and needs a pretend girlfriend to ease his way in.

I am dying to tell you what's really going on, but it would spoil a lovely surprise.Suffice to say, you will be surprised and touched and wooed. The One In My Heart reminded me of The Genius and The Muse by Elizabeth Hunter, Trade Me by Courtney Milan and the latest trilogy Elements of Chemistry by Penny Reid. The characters are highly intelligent, wry, cagey and not prone to dramatics. I absolutely love that, and if you do too, you are in for a treat!

Highly recommended, read it.
