After the first chapter, I thought I hated this; midway through, and particularly after the scene where Marianne makes dinner, I thought I loved it (it's beautifully written); near the end, I found it increasingly hard not to skim. I'm not very "romantic." Contains some really fascinating stuff about mothers and nations. ( ) The Perfect Circle was stunningly and poetically written describing the dangers of love, loss of self and rebirth through that pain. The shifts of thought and feeling are subtle so that it sometimes feels like a beautiful pounding on the same nail. By the end, however, you realize you've made an amazing long journey. I almost never reread passages while reading a book. With this one I found myself doing it repeatedly. This book is different from everything I have read this year. It's incredibly intense and personal with some beautifully poetic passages and very good insights. It's mainly about power of love: love found, passionately felt, lived, not taken, rejected, and in the end, lost. At the level of narration, it's many things: poetry in prose form, a glimpse at life in a small Italian village in a more journalistic style, a long love letter, all of those existing side by side and intertwining throughout the novel. näyttää 3/3 ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu

Marianne, a young Montrealer, has come to live in Tuscany to draw and write and examine her life. Here she meets Marco, a temptingly seductive man who still lives in his mother's house in the village and who's not prepared to commit himself to anything resembling a shared life. Though he breaks her heart, again and again, Marianne can only avoid him by returning to Canada. This first novel by Pascale Quiviger is marked by its luminous language and its unstinting look at what makes Marianne, and Marco, and, indeed, an entire village and the world beyond it, tick.
