"What should be a cozy and fun-filled weekend deep in the English countryside takes a sinister turn in Ruth Ware's suspenseful, compulsive, and darkly twisted psychological thriller. Leonora, known to some as Lee and others as Nora, is a reclusive crime writer, unwilling to leave her "nest" of an apartment unless it is absolutely necessary. When a friend she hasn't seen or spoken to in years unexpectedly invites Nora (Lee?) to a weekend away in an eerie glass house deep in the English countryside, she reluctantly agrees to make the trip. Forty-eight hours later, she wakes up in a hospital bed injured but alive, with the knowledge that someone is dead. Wondering not "what happened?" but "what have I done?", Nora (Lee?) tries to piece together the events of the past weekend. Working to uncover secrets, reveal motives, and find answers, Nora (Lee?) must revisit parts of herself that she would much rather leave buried where they belong: in the past. In the tradition of Paula Hawkins's instant New York Times bestseller The Girl On the Train and S. J. Watson's riveting national sensation Before I Go To Sleep, this gripping literary debut from UK novelist Ruth Ware will leave you on the edge of your seat through the very last page"--… (lisätietoja)

Contrary to what Reese Witherspoon says on the cover, I was not really scared.

This was fine. The mystery didn't seem to has too many loose ends or dropped plotlines as far as I could tell and for the most part there is a logical progression to how the plot moves. I just didn't find the story to be very memorable. The form of this book, with the flashing back and forth between the night of the crime and our main character in the hospital reminded me a lot of [b:Lock Every Door|41837243|Lock Every Door|Riley Sager|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1540938359l/41837243._SY75_.jpg|65308942]. This book came out first but I think Lock Every Door did a better job doing something interesting with that format.

This book fell into a lot a cliches. I'm not a person who thinks all tropes are inherently bad and authors should never use them but nothing original was done with them in this book which is my larger complaint. The main character, Lenora, is even a writer which feels SO cliche to me. All of the twists were also way to heavily telegraphed in this book. Though I didn't figure out exactly every plot twist, nothing surprised me about the conclusion and I was able to predict a few things.

The conclusion to this mystery really brought my enjoyment down. I really don't like mysteries that revolve around competition for a man and that's basically what we get here. I also don't think we got enough development for the villain as a villain. It's the one place where I think the author didn't add enough hints. I also thought the whole things with the Ouija board was pointless and I wish it just hadn't been included. It seems like it was almost completely a red herring and I don't like that.

It takes a lot more to impress me when it comes to this genre because it's the one I read the most as a child. I really want to see originality and I just didn't get that here as much as I wanted. ( )

Better than Woman in Cabin 10 but still highly predictable with a pretty ridiculous plot. ( )

What if a mean girl DIDN'T get want she wanted once...

A terrific thriller by a good storyteller.

Everyone has come across a woman or man like this. THE one who made you realize a psychopath had crossed your path leaving you dazed and confused by the wayside.

Also, the cult-like adoration of Flo makes you realize she is Claire's thrall. She owes Claire a life-debt. What is never brought to light but one wonders if perhaps Claire created the dangerous situation that made the impressionable (and slightly unhinged) Flo come into her service.

Perfect read for a dark stormy day. ( )

Such a fun read! What's better for a thriller/mystery than an isolated setting and some wildly intertwined backstories. I kind of wish the reveal was more of a surprise, it almost made too much sense given all the clues throughout, but maybe I'm just used to more outlandish reveals, now. The audiobook narrator is brilliant, very emotive, different voices for each character. Really great read/listen. ( )

I loved this book, I didn't think it was scary, but it was suspenseful. It is possible to have feelings for a high school boyfriend many years later. My mother often talked with regret about a boyfriend she had in high school, prior to WWII. So don't discount first loves, and the traumatic event of an abortion associated with it might make it hard to let go. No one ever said Nora still loved James just that there were still feeling there good or bad they were there. And despite what some of you may think there are crazy women like Claire who think they deserve to win and will take you out to win. If you don't think so then you haven't been in the real world. If you honestly don't think you have known someone like the women in this story then you have a charmed life I'm looking forward to reading more by this author in the future. ( )
