This book is intended for the person wishing to keep one or two hives for his own pleasure and profit, probably in his own garden; but it will also, within its limits, provide a sound basis for anyone who may later want to extend his beekeeping activities. It outlines for the beginner the merits and demerits of various types of hive, guides his first steps in handling bees, sketches in the natural history necessary for an understanding of bee behaviour, and then takes him through the various tasks which make up the beekeeper's year, from swarm control to honey extraction. There is a reassuring section on how to deal with things that go wrong. This book seeks to explain why, as well as how things should be done, but for those wanting more information a list of books for further reading is included. The novice will, in Discovering Beekeeping, take the first steps towards an interesting and profitable pursuit which can goive him enjoyment well into old age.
