It was a different take of the "normal" Cinderella. My child and I read Grimms' "Ashputtle" for a first grade lesson in variations of "Cinderella". We were both horrified. I had remembered the violence and punishing magic of that old German version from reading it in college, but the unapologetic patriarchal abuse was a shock when read with a young girl at my side. Were the men always so cruel to Ashputtle? What kind of life would she endure by marrying the prince? Would she have to hide that she's a witch? I feel that this new science fiction version was written to counter that version from the Brothers Grimm. There's no overt misogyny, no need for self-preserving trickery by Cinderella, and no mutilation. The prince in INTERSTELLAR CINDERELLA is impressed by Cinderella's abilities and allows her choices in her future. She doesn't seek humiliating punishment on her family, and there's no need for any. At the end, everyone has their freedom to leave each other alone. Just as good, the book stands on its own as a new story. The world and rhymes are fun, the robot mouse is adorable, the prince is clever, and Cinderella is a perfect role model for a young engineer. This book follows the plot of Cinderella but with a strong woman twist. Instead of dreaming about a prince, Cinderella dreams about fixing rockets. The Prince's ship breaks down on the way to the ball and Cinderella saves him by fixing it. In true Cinderella fashion, she leaves before the prince is able to get her name. When he comes looking for her, instead of a glass slipper he has her socket wrench that she left behind. She is able to fix the broken test ship and confirm to the prince that she is the girl he is looking for. He then asks her to marry him to which Cinderella says that she is too young for marriage but she would be his chief mechanic. I love this story because it is the prince that is in distress and Cinderella comes to his rescue. Also, I love that she doesn't accept his proposal and pursues her dream of being a rocket ship mechanic. This is a fun rhyming book that provides science and a positive message to both girls and boys. This book was a different spin on the traditional Cinderella story. Cinderella is from space, and is a girl who who can fix different things such as spaceships. The story follows just like the Cinderella story we all know, except her family is going to a galactic space ball, and she is forced to stay home and work on a broken spaceship. Her family ends up leaving her stranded without her tools, so her robotic mouse sends out a call for help, she's able to fix her ship and finds the prince is in need of some assistance, she helps him and then he asks her to attend the ball but she see's the time and quickly leaves her tool behind and disappears. The prince goes through the process of finding Cinderella by seeing who can use the tool properly. He eventually finds her and asks her to be his bride, Cinderella politely declines because she feels she is too young, Instead she agrees to be his Chief mechanic. I liked that this story showed the cinderella didn't need help being rescued by a prince, that she was her own person who could fid a way to get out of a bad situation. This story puts a whole another outlook on the popular fairytale story. ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu
