"In a small village in New York Charley Davidson is living as Jane Doe, a girl with no memory of who she is or where she came from. So when she is working at a diner and slowly begins to realize she can see dead people, she's more than a little taken aback. Stranger still are the people entering her life. They seem to know things about her. Things they hide with lies and half-truths. Soon, she senses something far darker. A force that wants to cause her harm, she is sure of it. Her saving grace comes in the form of a new friend she feels she can confide in and the fry cook, a devastatingly handsome man whose smile is breathtaking and touch is scalding. He stays close, and she almost feels safe with him around. But no one can outrun their past, and the more lies that swirl around her-even from her new and trusted friends-the more disoriented she becomes, until she is confronted by a man who claims to have been sent to kill her. Sent by the darkest force in the universe. A force that absolutely will not stop until she is dead. Thankfully, she has a Rottweiler. But that doesn't help in her quest to find her identity and recover what she's lost. That will take all her courage and a touch of the power she feels flowing like electricity through her veins. She almost feels sorry for him. The devil in blue jeans. The disarming fry cook who lies with every breath he takes. She will get to the bottom of what he knows if it kills her. Or him. Either way"--… (lisätietoja)

Talk about a "say what?" moment! This entire book is that. Really fun. Really twisty. Now, where do we go with that information? ( )

I want a Garrett spinoff. I really hope 10 is better because not a lot happened in this book and it was one of the weaker in the series. I love how much everyone loves Charley but sometimes she really gets on my nerves and I want to smack her and tell her she deserves none of it. Here's hoping book #10 is more action packed or I'm going to be sad. ( )

It took me a while to get through this one because life got in the way, but I really enjoyed it. I loved the change of scenery and pace, and how well characterized Charley is. She might have amnesia, but she's still herself and it's delightful. I also really appreciated how well Jones used our knowledge of the world and of the rest of the cast to signal what was happening off screen, even when Charley couldn't put it all together. ( )

Listened to Lorelei King deliver another outstanding narration of this ninth installment of the Charley Davidson series. She nails all the various characters, I can't imagine anyone else narrating this story.

Charley Davidson has lost her memory and is living as a waitress. In New York. All of her friends surround her posing as customers, hoping her memory will eventually return to her. We get to watch her discover that she can see dead people and that she falls into the same snark and patterns of helping others and getting into trouble as in her life before her memory loss.

Stupid little things that niggled at me, how so many of her friends could leave their lives in New Mexico to move to New York for so long and where is Amber ???

There's a lot of classic Charley events with her trying to help people which puts her into danger.
We're introduced to new dangers as she can see into another world and a creature trying to kill her as well as a stalker she doesn't deal with appropriately. It all feels very haphazard.

There's also these wonderful moments of friendship, reheated fire between her and Reyes (after we get past the jerky moments), laugh out loud memes, and a few moments that are heart wrenching.

A real mixed bag for me, an okay read, necessary information for the overall series arc but not my favorite in the series.

If you like my reviews I hope you will follow my blog. https://wyldheartreads.wordpress.com/ ( )

After the doozy of the prior book, it's not so surprising that Charley needed to hit the reset button. OR that Darynda had to hit the reset button.

This is a light-ish UF even though we deal with the dead and ghosts wanting to get closure and Satan's son is a big squeeze, etc., but when you tip over into the OP category, there has to be some kind of counterbalance.

As long as I don't come across THIS particular counterbalance *coughamnesiacough* too often in my reading, I let it slide because it IS awfully convenient and it CAN be an interesting track to take as we find out all the things about our favorite characters all over again.

Or just plain START AGAIN.

And this is where we are in this book. I've seen this trope done dozens of times -- or more, if you include all the movies and tv shows -- and I've seen it done BETTER than this.

And yet, I'm not playing a comparison game. Did THIS book manage to entertain me?

Yes, yes, and yes. All the snark is here and the slow reveals are all fully expected and comfortable as hell. Even the *deep and abiding sadness* is all just a silly joke to the reader because... let's face it: we know things turn out well in the end.

This is comfort food. There's no other way to describe it. ( )
