The Rest of Us Just Live Here is one of the best YA novels I read this year and a wondrful wrap up to my 2020 reding. I was really interested by the premise of regular teens living their lives while the Chosen Ones save the world, hopping that their school doesn't get blown up by the monster of the week before graduation.

Patrick Ness explored this idea a lot deeper than I expected, and twisted it so that it could explore not only the topic of normalcy, and what being a regualr. it is quite diverse (the protagonist has OCD and anxiety, his sister has anorexia, as well as some POC and queer rep). The book also has a very positive attitude to teraphy and medication - the teraphy session scene was among my favourite moments in the story ( )

Me han gustado mucho el protagonista principal, sus problemas diarios y sus situaciones cotidianas y sus amigos, pero la historia no era lo que me esperaba encontrar, y quizás se me ha hecho muy superficial para mi gusto. ( )

So much to like, but the thing with Mel and Call Me Steve, is almost a deal breaker. ( )

Obviously, I absolutely loved it. It's not your typical book. Especially not your typical Young Adult book. For some it might even be boring. Because it's not about saving the world. Exactly the opposite - it's about NOT saving the world and just watching others do it. It's about the everyday stuff - school, family, friends, relationships, sex. It also deals with something not many YA books include (or do well) - mental health issues. Anxiety, depression, food disorder. Everyone who had come in touch with these things will probably find something for themselves in this book. Don't get me wrong, it doesn't give answers. No, it raises questions. But, at least for me, the right questions. ( )
