Two girls ask him for help in solving their murders, leading to Jack being accused for both. A strong novel, apart from the romance elments which felt shoehorned in. For Jack, who has the ability to talk with dead people, life becomes very complicated. Two girls have asked for his help making him the prime suspect in their deaths. His parents and friends have their own drama going on. I loved the first person point of view. I know not everyone is a fan, yet I felt it was nicely done and made the story feel more personal. This is one for you to check out. Tämä arvostelu kirjoitettiin LibraryThingin Varhaisia arvostelijoita varten. Utopia, Iowa. This small town may not be everyone's utopia. Many people in town have special gifts, and Jack's gift is being able to see dead people. A murder has happened in town and several older residents sense a dangerous magic. Yansky tries to weave two stories together in order to describe and solve the murder, but I felt that these interruptions in the story were never going to connect. Thankfully, the plot of the main story was pretty solid. I wish the monster scenes at the end had not been rushed. Overall, I felt like I could identify with Jack and genuinely ended the book with a smile on my face. :) Tämä arvostelu kirjoitettiin LibraryThingin Varhaisia arvostelijoita varten. This young-adult book does have a little bit of everything: suspense, family drama, relationships, supernatural, and mystery. I enjoyed the family dynamic and friend dynamic between characters and the movie references made by the protagonist throughout the book. Sometimes the pacing seemed a little awkward where certain moments were rushed. There also seemed to be a lot of story lines happening at once. The, who killed who, mystery story-lines were great. The monster/queen-eating-someone's heart arc was a little rushed and random at the end. Overall, an entertaining read. Tämä arvostelu kirjoitettiin LibraryThingin Varhaisia arvostelijoita varten. A compelling YA novel with a fascinating setting, relatable characters and a suspenseful plot. Jake lives in Utopia, Iowa, a town in which the inhabitants have various gifts - or curses, depending on your point of view - and is also the home of Nirvana College, where students study the supernatural and try to enhance their powers. Jake can see dead people, and his gift -or curse, depending on your point of view - leads him to learn that he is in danger from a very ancient inhabitant of the city. Jake is a relatable character, but has a habit of defining things too much in terms of movies. It's an interesting character quirk, but in a book that's drawing a lot of cues from various films, it's almost too much to point out the derivation. Although this reads like a standalone novel, I would like more about the town, if not Jake himself.
I loved getting to know Brian Yansky's quirky and amiable characters as well as immersing myself in a world of weird.

HTML: Jack Bell has an unusual giftâ??or curse, depending on your point of view. And he's not the only one. In Utopia, Iowa, anything can happen. For the most part, aspiring screenwriter Jack Bell is just your typical Midwestern kid. He's got a crush on his hot best friend, Ash. He's coping with a sudden frostiness between his once crazy-in-love parents. He's debating where to go to college next yearâ??or whether to go at all. But then there's his gift (or curse): Jack can see dead people, just like the kid in The Sixth Sense. Lately, the ghosts are more distracting than usual, demanding that Jack get to the bottom of their mysterious deathsâ??all while avoiding the straitlaced Detective Bloodsmith, who doesn't believe in gifts or curses and can't help wondering why Jack keeps turning up at crime scenes. Is there a happily-ever-after in Jack's future, or is that only the stuff of mov Kirjastojen kuvailuja ei löytynyt. |
