Loved it

I couldn't put this book down and I want to write this review fast so I can start the sequel. Great storytelling about a woman who becomes the mistress of king Henry the eighth. Now I know this is not a new concept but it's definitely a different angle. Alice is considered the most beautiful woman in the kingdom but you will love her. Great characters all around. ( )

It's never a good thing to be a pretty maid in a court of lecherous nobles and an even more lecherous king. Alice Petherton is one of Queen Jane Seymour's Maids of Honor who winds up being pursued by Sir Richard Rich, Lord Thomas Cromwell's servant. This doesn't go over so well with Queen Jane's favorite Maid of Honor as she is his current plaything. To protect herself she catches the eye of Henry VIII and winds up his favorite, rather like walking on a tightrope of eggshells. When a child dies at the Tower of London because Henry VIII ordered his lions released he is would have the assistant beastkeeper executed for following his orders. Alice decides to confront the King for this injustice which doesn't make him happy. Out of favor, out of the palace, and into London to live at Offal Pudding Lane. The why is this happening to me was a bit annoying but it did hold my interest. What will become of her? Read and find out ( )

Being a lady in waiting at the Court of Henry VIII is always a risky business. Alice Petherton is one of these ladies. When Queen Jane goes into her time of confinement awaiting the birth of Their child, Henry begins looking around for his next conquest. Alice not only catches the King's eye, but also that of the notorious Richard Rich. Not wanting to cause strife, Alice tried to avoid Rich, thus making him her enemy. When Rich brings her to Cromwell's attention, things get even more complicated. What would happen if Henry loses interest in Alice? Or if Cromwell or Rich decide that she has become a liability?

I'm not sure that Alice Petherton actually lived, but this novel could very well describe the life of the any of the women that caught the eye of Henry VIII. The author paints a very realistic picture of what life may have been like at the time. I enjoyed the book and would like to see more with this character. I will also be looking for other books by the author. ( )
