This book is about some of the US presidents and what traits they had from Washington helping put out a fire to Clinton liking Jelly beans. The book has pictures all of this that made from form random objects. This book would be good in teaching the students about the presidents and kind of humanizing them. This book is pretty funny, but I think some of it would be funnier to adults than children. A simple children's picture book that brings together some presidential anecdotes will make the reader interested in learning more about the great men. This book humanizes these public figures and makes them relateable for children. The pictures are just as comical as the book is. Such a good read, and a great way to introduce the presidents to kids. Recommended Ages: Gr. 2-5 Plot Summary: A short paragraph explains a story or character trait about the presidents covered in this book. For example, Thomas Jefferson didn't like to dress up and instead met other countries leaders in comfortable clothes. George Bush only danced once in public--at his wedding. Ronald Reagan loved jelly beans, especially the coconut ones. Jimmy Carter helps others by traveling to other countries and meeting with the leaders and by building houses through Habitat for Humanity. Setting: none Characters: George Washington - good deeds Thomas Jefferson - comfortable shoes Andrew Jackson - hot tempers Abraham Lincoln - humble pie Ulysses S. Grant - speed demons Theodore Roosevelt - endless energy William Howard Taft - greatness Calvin Coolidge - fun and games Franklin D. Roosevelt - picky eating John F. Kennedy - life savers Richard M Nixon - all thumbs Gerald R. Ford - glamour Jimmy Carter - helping hands Ronald Reagan - sweet stuff George Bush - two left feet Bill Clinton - enthusiasm George W. Bush - sports fans Barack Obama - hopes and dreams Recurring Themes: presidents, representation, goodness, humor Controversial Issues: none Personal Thoughts: Some objects are understandable and relate to the story, but some are a puzzle that older students might want to figure out. Genre: nonfiction, collective biography? Pacing: fast, short quips about various presidents Characters: made the presidents seem more likeable and relatable Frame: Storyline: Activity: This is a very interesting book because it tells little-known stories about U.S. Presidents with illustrations of each one using objects relating to the story. I have never seen such unique illustrations. It does not discuss every president, but the well known ones. I would read this to a class and have the students make their own story and illustration of themselves using the same strategy. ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu

Presidents are made of big eaters -and so much more! You get a portrait of former U. S. president Jimmy Carter, who builds houses for the homeless. See the presidents as never before -- made out of objects! Using everything from blue jeans to boxing gloves, Hanoch Piven "builds" the characters of our leaders. And with revealing anecdotes to go along with Piven's creations, you'll never forget what makes up George (Washington), George (Bush), or anyone else in between. Kirjastojen kuvailuja ei löytynyt. |
