This new edition of The Green Ray brings the rarely available title by the famous French author Jules Verne to a new generation. The mysterious scientific phenomenon of the green ray is unpredictable and elusive. When Helena hears of its apparent mystical effects on the mind and soul she enlists her uncles and two very different suitors, one artist and one amateur scientist, to find it. They travel to Scotland to seek to catch a glimpse of green rays which shoot out from the sunset. Their numerous attempts are always unsuccessful, thwarted by clouds or boats blocking the sun, until finally the phenomenon is visible, but they are no longer watching the horizon. Having become familiar to Jules Verne's big adventure novels, it was a little strange that this one didn't go much further than Scotland and its islands, despite the heroes' calls to sail around the globe (which I thought would end up being followed by the heroes)... but nay!
This short novel is, in fact, more of a romance than an adventure story. However, this style of writing, surprising for Jules Verne, is not without its humour and poetry (many quotations from Ossianic poetry). I found each of the characters amusing, even if unoriginal - the insufferable Aristobulus Ursiclos, the dreamy and adventurous Helena Campbell, the clichéd 'fine artist' Olivier Sinclair, and the inseparable duo of the Melvill brothers.
In short, an enjoyable read, but the plot is a little too superficial. ( )
