"Barbara Simons was trying to figure out what to do, now that she and her employer had parted ways. She had the time, finally, to do everything she'd always wanted to do but didn't have the time for, but she needed to figure out how to finance it all. True, she had some money in the bank, a free, first-class airline pass good for the rest of her life, and a 560 SL Mercedes in the garage of her Montreal condo, but a girl can't live on possessions alone." "To get her mind off some of her problems, including a relationship that was going nowhere but out-of-town, she breaks into her friend Susan's ex-husband's apartment and takes high tea at the Ritz. Tea leads her into a den of gay cigarette hijackers; the break-in leads to the discovery of a body." "Suddenly, her problem isn't just financing a life of leisure but wondering whether she's going to have to finance a legal defense fund. That she is an Anglophone in a city where English is not only a second but a second-class language does nothing to raise her spirits. In fact, the only thing that seems to be falling faster is the snow. In just a few days, she had gotten a scabby knee, sold out a friend, tampered with evidence, convinced her neighbors she was a hooker, and decided that she had lost the love of her life. Enough was enough; Barbara Simons was about to strike back."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved Kirjastojen kuvailuja ei löytynyt. |

Hate characters, okay story
.
PLOT OR PREMISE:
Barbara Simons is a newly unemployed airline exec with nothing to do. Bored, she jumps at a chance to help her fabulous friends with their problems -- an ex-husband hiding money and uncovering a smuggling ring.
.
WHAT I LIKED:
Better written than Reichs' books in the same setting, and the story overall is interesting.
.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE:
I hated most of this book -- every character is one of life's beautiful people, all wealthy, all extremely ravishing or handsome, and all amazingly beautiful, perky, effective at turning men's heads deliberately and/or accidentally, and supposedly downright nice...not nice enough that you like them, but Barbara obviously thinks everyone else does. But Barbara isn't any bettter -- she's supposed to be this amazing go-getter business woman but she has been wallowing in self-pity for six weeks. She goes to fancy parties with the elites, but can't relate to the average guy behind the counter at the 7-11 without going off on some trip. And while the story is interesting, the ending feels like it wraps everything up in a whirlwind 3 pages. Finally, a small spoiler, there is a small sub-plot that ends on a "to be continued" basis, kind of like Evanovich does regularly with the Stephanie Plum series. I hate that with a passion -- I like some resolution, even if there is an ongoing storyline.
