"Habits are the invisible architecture of our lives. Rubin provides an analytical and scientific framework from which to understand these habits--as well as change them for good. Infused with her compelling voice and funny stories, she illustrates the core principles of habit formation with dozens of strategies that she uses herself and tests out on others. Rubin provides tools to help readers better understand themselves, and presents a clear, practical menu of strategies so readers can take an individualized approach. She tackles each strategy herself and in doing so shows us the importance of knowing ourselves and our own habit tendencies. Armed with self-knowledge, we can pursue habits in ways that will truly work for us, not against us. Going to the gym can be as easy, effortless, and automatic as putting on a seatbelt. We can file expense reports, take time for fun, or pass up that piece of carrot cake without having to decide. With a foundation of good habits, we can build a life that reflects our values and goals"--… (lisätietoja)

How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big: Kind of the Story of My Life (tekijä: Scott Adams) (Deesirings)
Deesirings: Adams suggest having "systems" rather than goals. Developing good habits appears to be a key system in Adams' approach to success and Rubin's book elaborates on how to do that. These two books therefore complement each other.

Lots of good tips and insights here, and with nearly as many pithy and inspiring quotes as are in Bartlett's Familiar Quotations. I mostly listened to this while cooking healthy food and walking for exercise, two of my recently adopted new habits! Based on her own description of herself, Gretchen Rubin and I could not be more different, but she knows that what's good for her may not be good for everyone, and her "four tendencies" model is a useful framework. This is one I think I'll flip through in paper or ebook again. It's definitely helpful for me to get some pointers on how to strengthen good habits and let go of bad ones, and Rubin presents hers well. ( )

Here's what you need to know about this book: I forgot that I'd read it a year prior and re-read it.

I listen to Gretchen's podcast (with her sister) and I really enjoy it and their dynamic. I liked Happier at Home and, more or less, the Four Tendencies can be a helpful construct for understand habits and behavior (what takes and what doesn't) both for yourself and those around you.

If you aren't already familiar with the podcast and/or you are and find Gretchen is best taken in small doses, this book won't change your mind. I don't think she actually is neurotic and sanctimonious, but she can come off that way. She focuses A LOT on other people's eating habits and while she says (writes) that she can't judge others by what works for her, she frequently recounts times she's provided unsolicited advice to strangers and acquaintances or told them how they should do something differently (by which she means better and more like her).

There are some helpful nuggets here on successfully forming good habits or rewriting bad ones, but they could have been distilled down into a much shorter book. I agree with another reviewer that many of the examples of how to act on the advice is in the 'duh,' camp. I also agree that she focuses heavily on dietary habits, which - while helpful as an example or two - is so heavily weighted (not to be punny) that it diminishes the other aspects and dynamics she discusses (plenty / scarcity; lark / owl, etc.). And that's a shame, because those - at least to me - were far more interesting and are far more prevalent on her podcast. ( )

A book about habits. I learned so much. About habits and myself. Now I hope I can follow the advice the book gives. I feel hopeful at least :) ( )

I do like tracking habits, schedules, and behavior and am always optimistic that this will bring about impressive changes in my life. And there's some good stuff here, small bits, here and there. But man, I find Rubin hard to take, both her voice and her writing style. A skimmer for sure. ( )

The concepts she puts forward in the first section are really compelling. My wife and I read it with great interest. We really loved the way she described picking and determining a path forward for ha it formation based on your own tendencies to be something with some real wisdom to it. But then, as she got into the descriptions of how to implement some of the changes I just kept saying "Well, duh..."

You could read the first part of the book and then skip the rest. ( )
