1. 1841 - The Ultimate Census 1841 is regarded by many who are interested in British genealogical research as the beginning of an era - the first of the nineteenth century returns of use to the family historian. Names and occupations are quoted and ages given to the nearest five years (rounded downwards); the birthplace is stated as being within or outside the county of residence. Equally important, individuals are grouped together in households, each householder having filled in, probably with assistance, a separate schedule.
