This old-timey word-book for young toffs vacationing in Normandy is a good resource for some obscurish French words and for finding out what the upper classes of a bygone era thought was important enough to learn extensive technical jargon about in a foreign language (furnishings! Oh my lord). The re-edition lays it on a bit thick with the retro waxed moustache stuff, but this book is fine. The best ideas illicit a "Why didn't I think of that?" response and, my first thought upon opening this book was just that! It is such a simple idea: a light easy to use dictionary of French set out, not in traditional alphabetical order, but by subject. When one is, for example, at the zoo, one does not wish to trawl through pages of talcum powder, targets and tangents when one is looking for the word 'tiger', only to wade through lace, lavender and lettuce in the search for 'lion'. With a normal dictionary, this is inevitable; NOT with this lovely little book. When our children were young, my wife and I used our schoolboy/girl French to talk about subjects in some way inappropriate for the nippers to hear. These conversations were often convoluted by severe restrictions upon our vocabulary: why could this marvelous book have been available then; many misunderstandings might have been avoided, although, it is simple enough for a child to use so, perhaps it is as well that it was so recently created! I received this book from Phaeton Publishing due to an early reviewer book being available at a later date than expected. A reprint of a 1929 French language guide. It provides "useful 'words' for a limited number of useful subjects." French words and the English equivalent are grouped by categories such as Flying, Round The House, When One Is Ill, Sports, and others. Some words and terms may have fallen from use (in the Telegraph Services section, for instance), but this is a useful and charming guide to the French language. ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu

The Brighter French Word-Book is intended for Bright Young People, but is also very useful for the less young people among us. ( )
