Death at Carp High, the first in the six part series, begins at the beach when high school seniors, Jake Brown and his best friend, Dean, spot a body floating beyond the waves while surfing one morning before school. They recognize the corpse and set out to solve how it ended up drowned in the ocean. What starts out as youthful enthusiasm, quickly evolves into something more dangerous. Threats from a beefy football player and a local sheriff, Spanish II, and a decided lack of romance in his life are some of the obstacles Jake will have to overcome. The last problem may be the most pressing. Fortunately, its the first to be resolved! The story is fast-paced and dialog driven. Perfect for a summer day at the beachor, in case you dont happen to live by the ocean and its not the middle of July, a comfortable couch, bed, or toilet seat. Keep your eye out for the sequels.… (lisätietoja)

This book was well-written and amusing. I enjoyed the unusual ending. All-in-all, I felt that this was a thoroughly enjoyable book. ( )

So Jake Brown and his best friend Dean are just out trying to catch a few waves before go to school at Carpinteria High when they spot something floating in the ocean. When they investigate, they discover it is the body of Carp High's most hated teacher. Despite all their school activities they just can't help trying to figure out who the killer is. But murder is not high school and they may have just dug themselves in too deep.

Well, this is the first book in a series and I found it pretty interesting. I think the boys are portrayed pretty well if you can buy that two senior boys are still virgins. The boys are smart but fall under the curse of all amateur detectives by letting everyone know how smart they are. The mystery is actually pretty good and kids who read this will learn a bit about the recent financial crisis. I was very happy to find a book with male protagonists I think boys and girls could relate to this book. Jake is a bit stuck on himself in some ways. But then what teen is not. These kids are pretty independent and take chances. I would like to see the parental units as Jake calls them more involved as the series progresses. ( )

Join in a journey on the inner sanctum of Jake Brown while he investigates the death of his math teacher. Jake is a stereotypical teenager that surfs upon a murder victim. He and his cohorts take it upon themselves to find to play modern day Hardy boys.

The book was a quick read that pulls the reader into the high school setting. It is perfect for the YA reader who wants a realistic mystery book. The thought process and speech patterns used by Jake and his friends emulate how high school students think and speak. I would recommend this book for a weekend or road trip read. ( )

The characters in Death at Carp High put me in mind of Bill and Ted from "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure". Take that movie and mix it up with a mystery and you have the flavor of this young adult novel.

Jake and his sidekick, Dean, find a body while "trying to catch some waves" before school. They do and say some of the most obscure things and are the epitome of a couple of "surfer dudes". These two think the cops are too dumb to figure out who the murder is, so they decide to go out and do it on their own.

Although there is humor throughout the story, Jake's vocabulary lessons became annoying - probably because of how many were presented throughout the book.

This was just an OK book for me. If you enjoy the cliche surfer attitude and like the characters in the movie "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure", you may really like this mystery. ( )

Jake and Dean are surfing one morning before school and find a dead body - but not just any dead body. The body of their math teacher, Mr. Johnson, whom no one liked. They know Mr. Johnson didn't drown while out for a swim; he is dressed in khakis and a long-sleeved shirt for one thing, and for another, there is a bullet hole in his head. Jake and Dean call the cops to report the body, and are told to keep quiet about their discovery; they can't even tell their parents. Jake and Dean go to school and can't stop wondering who murdered their math teacher. As they talk, they settle on a suspect, a fellow classmate, and then start investigating the murder. They find evidence which may incriminate not their classmate, but his father - one of the town's police officers. As they dig further, they find out the truth of what really happened. This book could have been good; the story idea is a good one, but the way it was written was annoying. All through the story, Jake, the narrator, keeps informing us of all of the definitions of his vocabulary words from English class. Really, who wants to read that in a murder-mystery? He also over-explains things that don't need it - such as telling the readers what a Slurpee is. This book is a young adult book; what teen doesn't know what a Slurpee is? I found some of the dialogue of the characters to not be very authentic - I have been a high school teacher for 15 years, and some of what the characters say just doesn't seem like what teenagers would say or talk about. There is another plot line in this book, as well as the murder, which doesn't really flow with the murder story. Jake and Dean have girlfriends, but it almost seems like that part was thrown in because the main characters are guys and there needed to be something about girls in the story. And, on a technical note, there were quite a few editing errors throughout the story. Teens may not notice as much as an English teacher like me, but it was frustrating to see a published book with so many errors. ( )
