Fiction. Mystery. HTML:

Minneapolitan Mira James has been taking it easy since college graduationâ??too easy. Due to a dead-end job and a cheating boyfriend, the Twin Cities have lost their charm, and Mira decides to begin a new life in rural Battle Lake. Right away she is offered jobs as an assistant librarian and part-time reporter, and falls into an unexpected romance with a guy who seems to be the perfect man until he turns up dead between the reference stacks her tenth day on the job.
Anxious to learn more about the man who had briefly stolen her heart, Mira delves into the hidden mysteries of Battle Lake, including a old land deed with ancient Ojibwe secrets, an obscure octogenarian crowd with freaky social lives, and a handful of thirtysomething high school buddies who hold bitter, decades-old grudges. Mira soon discovers that unknown dangers are concealed under the polite exterior of this quirky small town, and revenge is a tator-tot hotdish best served cold.
A hip, humorous, and gripping account of small-town murder, this novel is the first in a series of cozies featuring Mira James, an urban woman with rural Minnesota roots.

Praise:

"Jess Lourey writes about a small-town assistant librarian, but this is no genteel traditional mystery. Mira James likes guys in a big way, likes booze, and isn't afraid of motorcycles. She flees a deadend job and a deadend boyfriend in Minneapolis and lands up in Battle Lake, a little town with plenty of dirty secrets. The first person narrative in May Day is fresh, the characters quirky. Minnesota has many fine crime writers, and Jess Lourey has just entered their ranks!"â??Ellen Hart, Lamda Award-winning author of Jane Lawless & Sophie Greenway Serie… (lisätietoja)

I'm kind of shocked to see such a low review for this book, I loved the series! Living in Minnesota myself, I really can relate. I would have to say, in order to get a full sense I highly recommend you read more than just the first in the series, it picks up pace with more romance and humor. If you're a fan of Stephanie Plum, I suggest these, give more than the first book a shot. Mrs. Berns is to Mira what Lula is to Stephanie Plum. Add in two men who fight for Mira, the whole series kept me reading. ( )

Mira James comes to Battle Lake to house sit for her friend Sunny. When she arrives she gets hired as Battle Lake's assistant librarian which pays enough to pay her bills but to eat she also takes on a job as reporter for the Battle Lake Recall.

When she finds the body of the man she has been dating, in the library, she sets out to find his killer.

Cozy mystery, with enough fun characters to add humor to the mix, but not over the top quirky. Interesting plot that is consistent and a relaxed well-paced flow to the writing that makes this an enjoyable read. ( )

I have been reading this book on and off at work during moments of mind numbing boredom, so it's taken me ages to finish it - I can't even remember when I started it.

I say that by way of a disclaimer, because I just found this book to be 'meh'. I didn't hate it and I can't point to anything and say 'this was wrong!' or 'this sucked!". It was generally well written and it was a very well plotted out book. The ending was both a bit surprising and totally creepy. The main character was likeable, if not someone I'd list as "fictional characters I wish were my friends". The depiction of the old people was both hilarious and disgusting.

But the book just didn't do it for me. Meh. ( )

Mira James, the newly appointed assistant librarian in Battle Creek, finds a corpse in the library. She had hoped this guy was going to be somebody special in her life and he had stood her up the day before. She tries to find out what happened.

I bought this, the first in a series, after enjoying one of the later ones, but found it difficult to work up any enthusiasm. I don't think I'll be bothering with any of the others. ( )
