I found this book to be like a early chapter book, it has action and adventure with some twists. Both the boy and the deamon have more in common than they let the other one know. And may also be the same age. The misadventures they get into are very character driven. For me the story ended too soon with too many questions unanswered. Andy Mulberry takes a unique idea and has spun it into a story. The main character, Jack, stumbles upon a card offering the service of buying a demon. Deciding that’s exactly what his castle needs in order to attract more tourists, he decides to order one. The author has a good start with the book, though the ending is a bit lacking and ends too abruptly. Though, perhaps, since it is in a series, this is not too bad of a thing, as plenty of other successful authors have used this device as well. She does a good job of making the demon unique and bringing her own voice to the table. Boys, and even girls, will enjoy this book if they are into the fantasy genre. I received this book in exchange for an HONEST review. Please keep in mind that this is my opinion...yours may differ, but this is MINE.The book is basically about a young boy that lives in a castle with his parents and he isn't overly happy with his life. One day he finds a piece of paper advertising a "free demon". He doesn't think it can be true but boredom and curiosity push him to call the number anyways. When the crate with his demon arrives, the adventure starts... When I started reading this book I was worried. The first thing that jumped out at me was the use (misuse) of "tense" and some other editing issues. I'm not sure why but I am drawn to this type of thing...writing mechanic errors. THANKFULLY, either the errors ceased or I started to enjoy the story to the point of not being able to see the errors anymore. Overall I really enjoyed the story. The characters were likeable, even the demon, and the story flowed well. I wasn't too fond of the ending but it did a good job setting up for future books to follow in a series. Great for children but also enjoyable as an adult. Is this book another "Harry Potter"? No, far from it...but it is definitely worth the time and was an easy read. The author could have used an editor (or a better one) but the mistakes were not critical and the quality of the story was able to "shine through". Even though I received this for free, I might just go buy this on Amazon to support the author. GREAT JOB. SIDE NOTE: I feel somewhat strange writing this review--a positive review. Not because of the book itself, but because so many of the early reviewer/member give-a-way books have been, honestly, a waste of time...yet so many people have been writing "glowing" reviews for them. This book DESERVES a good review but yet I feel it might get lost in the "fodder" due to over-inflated reviews of many other books. This review was written for LibraryThing Member Giveaways. I was given this book in exchange for an honest review!I was excited to get this book. I have an eight year old who has Aspergers and does not like any form of reading. He was upset at first that I wanted to read the book to him, but about two pages in he was loving it. He ended up grabbing my Kindle from me and reading it himself. Can't wait for more from this author, and neither can he. This review was written for LibraryThing Member Giveaways. A few typos here and there, but nothing too bad. The story was entertaining and it was written in a fast-paced, easy-to-read format. Overall a good read. I look forward to reading the next book in the series to find out what happens next. näyttää 5/5 ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu
If you owe Hell gold but you can't pay, you're about to have a bad day! Jack Harper lives in an old castle turned museum. The day he calls Hell to order a demon is one of his more interesting days of his twelve year old life. One demon delivery later, Hell wants to be paid in gold. Between you and me, Jack can't pay. He's in a bit of a hellish pickle. WARNING...this book contains a scowling demon, bad decisions, a skeleton key, not foul but hellish language, an ordinary boy and an extraordinary castle. You've been warned. Kirjastojen kuvailuja ei löytynyt. |
