"In a small New England town over half a century ago, a boy is playing with his new toy soldiers in the dirt in front of his house when a shadow falls over him. He looks up to see a striking man, the new minister, Jamie learns later, who with his beautiful wife, will transform the church and the town. The men and boys are a bit in love with Mrs. Jacobs; the women and girls, with the Reverend Jacobs--including Jamie's sisters and mother. Then tragedy strikes, and this charismatic preacher curses God, and is banished from the shocked town. Jamie has demons of his own. Wed to his guitar from age 13, he plays in bands across the country, running from his own family tragedies, losing one job after another when his addictions get the better of him. Decades later, sober and living a decent life, he and Reverend Charles Jacobs meet again in a pact beyond even the Devil's devising, and the many terrifying meanings of Revival are revealed. King imbues this spectacularly rich and dark novel with everything he knows about music, addiction, and religious fanaticism, and every nightmare we ever had about death. This is a masterpiece from King, in the great American tradition of Frank Norris, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Edgar Allan Poe"--… (lisätietoja)

So boring I had to set it aside for weeks before forcing myself through to the end.

A lot of the Stephen King novels I've read most recently are awash in '70s, '80s, and '90s nostalgia, the last two with some guy droning on incessantly about his childhood. And here, King doubles down on the nostalgia to include tributes to gothic horror influences like Mary Shelley and H. P. Lovecraft, giving us a mad scientist and elder god crap. Man, I really dislike Lovecraftian horror.

Ho-hum. ( )

There's something about Stephen King's writing style that just doesn't jive with me For example I felt this way on multiple novels that I've listened to (Keep in mind that I've never physically picked up a Stephen King novel and read a physical copy). It seems to me that when I end up not liking or not caring as much for a Stephen King novel that it's because the narrator seems to be telling us a story but I don't completely understand what the conflict seems to be until more than a quarter of the way through the book. This book is broken into two different parts: the narrator's childhood and the relationships that he has between his family and Minister who comes to town, and the second part consisting of meeting the minister for a second time in his life. It wasn't until almost an hour into the book of listening that you learn that there was an issue with the minister or that there would be an issue with the minister. That issue turned out to be not exactly minor but not exactly major when it comes to the long run of the story. And what I would consider the main conflict of the story doesn't present itself until about halfway through the book in part 2, so I would say my main issue with Stephen King novels is that I don't know what the conflict is until more than a quarter of the way through the story and the narrator's explanation and recalling of their life doesn't help me to understand what the conflict is going to be. I feel like I have a close understanding of their life and their relationships with people, but I don't understand what their relationships have to do with the conflict until what I would consider too late. I feel like I need to know what the conflict is within the first few chapters so that I can understand where the story is going.

I thought the premise of the story was okay, Stephen King's prose is always impeccable, but I'm not sure I like his overall style of storytelling. I think I might enjoy his short stories a little more.

I really enjoyed The Shining, but that seems to be the only one that I've read that has got to the conflict earlier on in the story. ( )

Unsettling and disturbing - in other words, a good read! It is a bit of a slow burn, but well-written and enjoyable, even through the slower parts. ( )

Started this as an audiobook but continued as an epub. Both kept me gripped and I was delighted to find how long it was.
By the 7 8th of the book I was ready for it to wind up and the ending was just a bit far fetched.
A good yarn, quite engaging and I felt it was similar in style to 112213. I just wish he would write something as good as that again. ( )

The last part of the book moves from the raw emotion about family, love, aging and lost opportunity — all of it written with unusual candor, even for Mr. King — to the horror legacy of those names to whom the book is dedicated.

...veteran yarn spinner King continues to point out the unspeakably spooky weirdness that lies on the fringes of ordinary life.

When I think of Charles Jacobs--my fifth business, my change agent, my nemesis--I can't bear to believe his presence in my life had anything to do with fate. It would mean that all these terrible things--these horrors--were meant to happen. If that is so, then there is no such thing as light, and our belief in it is a foolish illusion. If that is so, we live in darkness like animals in a burrow, or ants deep in their hill.

And not alone.
Astrid and I spent most of the breaks kissing, and I began to taste cigarettes on her breath. I didn't mind. When she saw that (girls have ways of knowing), she started to smoke around me, and a couple of times she'd blow a little into my mouth while we were kissing. It gave me a hard-on I could have broken concrete with.
