This is essentially an early “rough draft”, not the “original version”

This new version of Tolstoy's masterpiece is an interesting dive into the writing process of by which Tolstoy created his works. There are some spots that are rougher than in the Canonical Version of the text, but numerous gems left out of the generally read version. I would recommend anyone that is thinking of reading this version of the text, read it along side to new Pevear/Volokhonsky translation (released at the same time as this version). I know that this is a huge undertaking but so far has been very enlightening for me. The Original Version is 400 pages smaller than the Canon Version but a reader should try to maintain the same place, plotwise, in the two texts.

The Bromfield translation is, according to a friend of mine who reads Russian fluently and has read the 2000 release of the Russian version of the text, quite good, maintaining as much accuracy to the text while not creating a plodding or unintelligible translation.
