When the moment for Gene to take Nancy to her desired death in Coffeeville arrives, she is unexpectedly admitted to the secure unit of a nursing home and he is constrained to call upon the help of his two remaining friends: Bob Crenshaw, a man who has been officially dead for 40 years, and Jack Guravitch, a disgraced weatherman in the throes of a midlife crisis. They 'kidnap' Nancy and drive to Mississippi in a stolen tour bus once owned by Paul McCartney. Along the way they are joined by a young orphan boy called Eric and an exotic dancer.… (lisätietoja)

This book was the one that I distributed for world book night, considering the subject it was a fun upbeat and enjoyable read. ( )

Strangely addictive rambling novel of the quest for Doc to fulfil his promise to Nancy to travel to Coffeville to end her life when she can no longer cope with the inevitable Alzheimer's ( )

This is a book with great characters, humour and an interesting historical and geographical backdrop. Eugene Chaney III makes a promise to his college lover, Nancy, that he is called upon to fulfil when she reconnects late in life. It made me laugh out loud and cry noisily (not a good book to be reading on a train!!) but it is not without its frustrations. Part 1 is spent introducing the leading characters, chapter by chapter, and giving their individual detailed biographies so we know them well before the 'road journey' begins and some people may find these too detailed and disjointed but I loved some of the quirkiness that mixed Che Guevara, civil rights and even a trip to Egypt.
The second half of the book is the journey and this is where I found myself becoming more and more emotionally engaged with the five main characters and I also looked out an atlas to trace the journey as I as intrigued to know if some of these places actually existed (they do). At the core of the story there is the difficult question about Alzheimer's and euthanasia but it is sensitively handled; it makes you think about the topic but without being heavy-handed or crass.
It is written in an easy style and I could see the story playing out in a film is way. I feel it would make a great film and found myself casting the book as I went along, always a good sign for me, as the characters sprang to life off the pages. The way part 1 is written does mean some folk may have struggled to get into the flow but if you persevere I think the 'pay off' is in part 2 where you feel you are invested in the stories of these 5 main characters and that makes the setting up worthwhile. This was a five star read for me!

Set in America, the story begins in 1959 when Nancy Travis and Eugene Chaney III (known as Doc) are both at university and fall in love. Nancy's mother and grandmother had both succumbed to Alzheimer's at a relatively early age, and Nancy is terrified that the same thing will happen to her, so she makes Doc promise that if it does he will help her to end her life before she is completely consumed by the disease. We then jump forward many years to a time when Nancy and Doc have gone their separate ways and are retired people, when out of the blue she rings and asks him to fulfil the promise made all those years earlier.

Unfortunately, before he is able to make any plans, Nancy is committed to a secure institution for her own safety and after enlisting the help of two old friends Doc kidnaps her and they journey across America to take her to the place she has specified, picking up a young orphan on their way.

So we have five very different characters making this epic journey and having some hilarious experiences on the way. The author gives the reader a very detailed account of the lives of the characters up to the point that they make this journey and they're so well drawn that I really felt I knew them all and cared about what happened to them. There are many other peripheral characters, all equally interesting, who play minor parts in the story, making up a rich cast of characters. Set against a background of actual events, principally surrounding the growth of the Civil Rights movement, this is a novel rich in detail and human interest, which kept me engrossed from Page 1.

The book is described as 'a funny story about sad things' and that is such an accurate description. I laughed out loud several times and smiled many, many more, and must admit to shedding a tear at a point near the end. A book that engages me throughout and makes me laugh and cry has to be really special, which this definitely is. One to recommend to others and read one again one day.

I think it would make a fabulous film. ( )

This is the bittersweet love story of college sweethearts Nancy and Gene (Doc) and his promise to fulfil her final wish to help her die before Alzheimer’s takes over her life.

The book is split in 2 parts, the first one introduces Nancy, Gene and Bob and their time at Duke University in 1960s America. It relates their relationship and Nancy’s realisation that she will inherit her mother’s Alzheimer’s and sets up the journey Gene and Nancy will have to take in order to fulfil Nancy’s final wish. The second part is a road trip of friendship and adventure through the deep American South to reach Coffeeville where Nancy, Gene and Bob are joined by Gene’s godson and Eric, a boy looking for his last remaining relative.

The first part of the book was very enjoyable and informative. You can tell J. Paul Henderson is very interested in American history and American life and he peppers the story with historical characters of the 1960s and actual episodes of American history. Nancy, Gene and Bob are very likeable characters and their adventures in University and after graduation reminded me a bit of Forrest Gump. I especially liked Bob’s life journey and the people he got to meet. The second part introduces new characters which I found were not as enjoyable. The journey was fun and interesting but the background stories of the new characters and their relatives were not as relevant to the story and I was left wanting more about Nancy and Gene’s relationship and the emotional journey they go through in order to reach Coffeeville.

This was a wonderful read which touched issues about Alzheimer’s, love, friendship and death very tactfully. It is definitely a funny story about sad things and a very enjoyable read. ( )

Two things struck me before I started to read this book-
1. I was concerned this would be upsetting and depressing
2. The author had such an interesting background – here was an ex foundry worker from the mill area of West Yorkshire writing a book about American characters.

In answer to number one, I did not find this upsetting or depressing. The author has written this book with care and attention.
This is essentially a love story starting in the 60s in the deep American south. The characters are Nancy and Gene.
The subject of Alzheimer’s begins when Nancy’s mother develops this disease. She tells Gene that if she herself were ever to develops this, that she would want him to assist her to die. He agrees as he does not think he will ever need to keep that promise.
Then suddenly Nancy ceases the relationship without a reason why. The reader is kept wondering, but not for long. Some 45 years later sadly Nancy has Alzheimer’s and appears back in Gene’s life so that he can fulfill the promise made all those years ago. Nancy has it all worked out and so begins the trip to Coffeeville.
The reader knows the inevitable will happen, but the author has written this with care. It is a subject we cannot shy away from. The book was not depressing I found myself laughing out loud with the characters. I really enjoyed this story.
The author and his background has intrigued me in answer to number two, I enjoyed his style of writing and the courage to attempt such a difficult and sensitive subject. I will be on the look out for further books by John Paul Henderson.
