Jennifer St. Giles begins a dazzling new series that takes you into a world of seductive shape shifters and mystical beings, and into the hearts of a band of heroic warriors known as The Shadowmen. . . . Yesterday, Erin Morgan worked for a pioneering Manhattan medical center. Today, she's on the run, witness to a chilling conspiracy. Fleeing for her life in the Tennessee mountains, she is run off the road by a mysterious beast . . . and things only get stranger when she wakes the next day to find a naked Adonis sprawled on the hood of her car. For centuries, Jared has been a shape shifter, sworn to protect mortals like Erin. But in saving her, Jared has damned himself, for the poison from his battle wound stirs a terrible blood lust. Determined to protect Erin, Jared stays by her side and discovers a sensual rapture beyond imagining . . . and a love that can change his fate. But can Jared overcome his savage thirst and protect Erin from the beast within?… (lisätietoja)

I loved the characters in this book and overall enjoyed the book itself. But I felt like I was missing some key information to really understand what was going on. It was as if I'd jumped in part way through a series and found myself double checking to make sure I hadn't missed a previous book. Maybe the subsequent books will provide better explanations. ( )

Erin Morgan was a nurse treating only the most elite patients at Dr. Cinatas' clinic. Now she was on the run from her former boss after discovering dead bodies in the basement, people sacrificed for the use of their blood. Forced from the road by her deadly pursuers Erin discovers herself in a cow pasture with a naked man playing hood ornament on her blazer. But, this man is not like any other, Jared is a Shadowman a former spirit warrior who fought against the forces of evil who is now infected with the very poison he had sought to destroy. Together they will try to defeat the demons within and without in the small town of Twilight, Tennessee, where everything is possible.

This story was an enticing lead in to a paranormal romance series I had not heard of before, other than the fact that this book has been gracing my tbr pile for the last couple years. It leads me to wonder if the series was ever completed or was left in limbo. I’ll have to check it out. Werewolves, demons, witchy psychics and plots of world domination make it a pleasing smorgasbord of supernatural interests. The only downside I can see is that it didn't really have anything to set it dramatically apart from the various other paranormal series that tread the same premise. I liked all the characters, both main and side, and it is pretty easy to see where the next novels of the series may be going in the romantic pairing departments. The bedroom scenes here were pretty steamy and were a bit lengthy, but it wasn't so much as to be objectionable.

This is another fairly interesting start to what seems like to be another fairly interesting paranormal romance series and I may look into reading the next one in the future, should it be out there. ( )

Wow. I picked this one up cold, having no expectations whatsoever. Okay, that's not true. There's a half-nekkid man on the cover and a wolf in the background--that along with the title made me think "werewolf romance"--just a wild guess.

In fact, that's one of my few quibbles with this story--it's a bit of false advertising. Yes, the hero does shapeshift, but that's not the main point of the story. Or rather, it's not your typical werewolf story, which is what I was expecting.

Instead, it's more comparable to Angela Knight's Mageverse. But I'm getting ahead of myself.

Erin Morgan is confused, frightened, and on the run after discovering that the doctor she worked for, who she thought was working on an innovative cancer cure, is actually a murderer. Then her car is hit by a creature that's subsequently attacked and driven off by a wolf. She crashes, passes out, and when she wakes up, there's a naked man on the hood of her car.

Jared is the Shadowman who, in wolf form, protected her from the Tsara that attacked her. Unfortunately, in defending her, he was bit himself, and the poison from the Tsara's bite will spread until he becomes Tsara himself, dependent on the blood of humans, especially a particular kind of human--the Elan, like Erin.

Erin's torn between two goals: help Jared, who's injured and apparently feverish, and expose Dr. Cinatas. Jared's goal is to protect Erin, not only from the Tsara, but from himself and what he's becoming. Unfortunately, touching Erin is the only thing that eases his pain, even while his desire for her blood grows stronger.

Which brings me to my second quibble, and only major one: I got confused. Which is no doubt evident in my attempt to summarize. To be fair, I probably shouldn't have read this when I did--I was exhausted. The night after I finished it, I slept 11 hours straight. So a re-read would probably make it much clearer. Still, I loved it anyway, so that's saying something.

This is an exciting, action-packed story in an intriguing contemporary fantasy world, but what really makes it stand out for me are the characters. Erin's character rang very true to me--she was neither too good to be true nor too stupid to live; neither was she too credulous or too doubting. She was determined, but she was also scared. The force keeping them apart--Jared's fears that he was a danger to her--was likewise believable. While in his POV, I could feel his conflict and desperation.

There were several secondary characters I'd like to see more of; not to mention that I'd like to spend more time in this world. I hope this is just the first of a long series. In the meantime, I'll be looking for Jennifer St. Giles's backlist. ( )
