Winnie the Witch and her feline companion, Wilbur, attend Cousin Cuthbert's birthday party dressed as pirate and parrot, and find many like-minded guests once there. Leading all of the other 'pirates' on an adventure, Winnie conjurs a pirate ship, and the companions embark on a seafaring voyage, determined to find the treasure island, and return its riches to the party. After an encounter with another band of pirates, and a false start in the form of a chest containing nothing but sardines - much to the pleasure of Wilbur - they do just that, making everyone happy...

The fourteenth entry in Australian author Valerie Thomas and British illustrator Korky Paul's wonderful series of picture-books about Winnie the Witch, Winnie's Pirate Adventure brings a nautical flavor to the quirky adventures of this endearing witch. As always, the happenings are pleasingly magical, while the artwork is colorful and complex. There is always something so energetic about the illustrations in the Winnie books, and this is no exception. There's such a sense of motion, and of fun, in Paul's paintings, and so very much to look at on each page. Recommended to young readers who enjoy witchy and/or piratical tales, and to fans of Winnie and Wilbur. ( )
