Adrienne is a talented young girl dealing with numerous problems in her life ranging from the mundane financial problems most have to deal with, to the supernatural curse she has inherited - though no one knows why. Her life becomes entwined with that of two others affected by curses brought upon them by ancestors and the ensuing chaos is a tumbling, twisting tale of love, betrayal and courage.

Not surprisingly the central thread to the tale is Voodoo, with vivid descriptions of rituals. As a practising catholic this at times made me a little uneasy but that is a personal observation rather than a criticism to the book.

I was a little disappointed in how quickly this tale was wrapped up, and how many threads were left hanging. I appreciate that this is the first in a planned series but it felt a little like the author suddenly realised this 95% of the way in and quickly wrapped up this book in order to continue with the true story. Also I found the editing sadly lacking. As stated above I did read an advanced reading e-copy so this may be corrected before general release. The main issue was the confusion in where Addy is from which prevents easy reading at times as I was flicking back to check where the story was based, New Orleans or Atlanta.

All in all, I really enjoyed reading this story which drew me in but the quick ending and poor editing spoilt the experience and consequently reduce the star rating. ( )

I loved this one. Intriguing right from the get go drawing the reader into the dark world of voodoo magic. Fascinating to read about. I loved the history and the world of the voodoo magic and curses. The characters were well written. I loved both Adrianne and Jayden. Both were likeable and believable teens and there were several times throughout the novel when Addy just needed a big hug. Jayden started off as a jock, but had a nicer side to him.

Plenty of twists and turns in the plot, and some interesting links with all the other characters. Rene was one of the more interesting ones, a voodoo gang member, reluctant warrior, showing up to help Adrianne deal with the voodoo world when she got dragged in wanting to know more about the mysterious death of her older sister.

I hope we see more of Emma in the next book, a minor character, though she was a true friend, who could be turned into a really great character. Jax was a pretty formidable bad guy, warped by his reasoning for going the darker route. And the twist with the Red Man and the White Zombie was a mind blower.

(And I hope Kimmie the high school bitch really gets what's coming to her!)

And that cliff hanger ending was a killer! I want the next one now!! ( )

This book kept me up all night.. literally. I could not put this down until I finished and finish I did at 2:30 this morning!

I need the next one now. Okay moving on.

When the story first starts we meet Marie Toussiant. A very powerful voodoo priestess. We also meet Rene who will come into play later as well and Candance. Candance is also very important in voodoo and works with healing. Rene is a gang member that helps protect voodoo among other things.

There is quite a few main players in this story so you have to pay attention so you don't lose anything. This is one of those stories where you have to pay attention or you will get lost, then again most books dealing with voodoo are that way.

There is a slight could be triangle in this book and while I thought I had a side at first i found I swapped side fairly quickly! Adrienne moves back to New Orleans 5 years after her sister's disappearance, not only is she just trying to get somewhere in life, but she also wants to figure out what happened to her sister and why the mark of the family curse has now appeared on her.

Jayden doesn't believe in his grandmama's voodoo nonsense. In fact he hates hearing about it. But he loves his family. (I think he thinks he's too good for them) So when his grandmama tells him to beware the white zombie and to always always wear the dog tags she has a protective spell on for him, he agrees just because it's a family thing. Cause I mean c'mon he doesn't believe in anything she's telling him.. Until maybe he should just a little..

Rene is the second in command of the gang he is in. His brother Jax is in command. Rene is tough on the outside but I believe has a heart, but tries not to show it. He is protective and believed to be the voodoo warrior. But when it comes down to it can he make the decision to really protect the one who needs it?

Like I said there are so many more key players than just the three mentioned. Everyone's stories are linked.

This book teaches us that: Our ancestors decisions can affect what goes on for us today and we all may have a deeper connection than we ever thought possible. ( )

It is not like I have a ton to say about this book, other than I did not enjoy it that much.

I love the cover, it was actually that and the summary that sucked me in. Then I found out that this was the first in a new series and thought that it would be great to start some series (since it is one of my secret resolutions). But I just felt like everything that happened, happened too quickly. Some books generally tend to drag things out and because of that, the book becomes boring. But then again, when stuff happens to easily or too quickly, the book also becomes boring.

I did not really care for the characters that much, I liked Adrienne and Jayden, but then again, I did not really like them. Suddenly they just liked each other? And then there was this love-triangle thing to it that I did not enjoy - I HATE love triangles. Emma was sweet, but we did not see that much of her, so I feel like I can't really form an opinion of her.

When it comes to the voodoo aspect of the book, which was probably my favorite thing in the book, it was intriguing. I really like the idea of being able to read tarot cards, I don't really know why, but those kinds of things have always intrigued me. I just felt like there wasn't enough of it in the book.

I know the thing with her sister in the end was supposed to be a plot twist, but I don't really feel like it made that much of a difference, I was beginning to hate her anyway - also, I feel like it is typical that a sweet young girl fall for the older bad guy... Can we see something else?

One of the things I really liked in the book was the family history - because I really like that sort of things. I feel like having a family history told to you from a book gives the book a certain feeling, you get to know the characters better and overall I feel like it gives deeper meaning to things happening. When you hear about the curse - I mean the whole story about the curse in the end, you get goose bumps.

That ending.. I really do not know what to call it. I feel like it just stopped. It's not really a cliffhanger as much as a non-ending. It just stops abruptly, and I really do not know if I want to read the next book...

Since I have very mixed feelings about this book, I have to give it 3 hearts ( )
