An interesting play, marred by the writing out of dialect that makes it close to unreadable - and probably unproducible, unless it came with a full dictionary of what many of these words mean. I was not lost in the story most of the time, but the insistence on writing of dialect that was so common in the early part of the 20th century was execrable. It also sounds at first as though the story is going to be a standard trope of la-di-dah uppity woman marries common working man and destroys him, and the characters spend much of their time trashing this woman. Lawrence, however, decides to be more nuanced than that, and the story (sort of) works. The ending would not play for a modern, 21st century audience, but back in the time this was written, it was probably the best ending he could have given it. Half a star lost for the positing of "strong mother" being the cause of the male lead's downfall. Nope - not strong. Clingy, needy, and demanding. Totally different. Otherwise, a decent work, and with a fair amount of female roles. ( ) ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu
