"When Molly Wizenberg married Brandon Pettit, she vowed always to support him, to work with him to make their hopes and dreams real. She evinced enthusiasm about Brandon's enthusiasms: building a violin, building a boat, and opening an ice cream store--none of which came to pass. So when Brandon started making plans to open a pizza restaurant, Molly felt sure that the restaurant would join the list of Brandon's abandoned projects. When she finally realized that Delancey really was going to happen, that Brandon was going to change all of her assumptions about what their married life would be like, it was too late. She faced the first crisis in their young marriage. Opening a restaurant is not like hosting a dinner party every night. Molly and Brandon's budget was small, and the tasks at hand were often overhwelming. They had to find a space they could afford, gut renovate it themselves, find second-hand furniture and equipment, build what furniture they couldn't find, buy and install a wood-burning oven, pass health inspections, hire staff, and establish a billing and payroll system. They lost a financial partner. Their cook disappeared the day they opened. Still, their restaurant was a success, and Molly managed to convince herself that she was happy in their new life. Until Halloween night, when she was forced to admit she could no longer pretend. While Delancey is a funny and frank look at behind-the-scenes restaurant life, it is also a bravely honest and moving portrait of a tender young marriage and two partners who had to find out how to let each other go in order to come together"--… (lisätietoja)

Really enjoyed this book! She's a phenomenal writer. Also made me realize that I never, ever want to open a restaurant. ( )

Listened to an audiobook of this - was perfectly good recording but a bit difficult during the exact recitation of each recipe - might need the book to actual capture any of those to try! LOL ( )

This was just OK, not something I would tell people they must read. In fact, it was disappointing and I'm not sure why. It's the true story of a married couple who have no restaurant experience yet who decide to open a pizza restaurant. Molly (the author) is a food writer/blogger and Brandon is a dabbler whose past interests would predict he will lose interest before the restaurant even opens. I appreciated the author's honesty: her doubts, her emotional responses to the various trials and traumas and pre-opening jitters. At times it felt more like blog posts than a book.

What worked - it's a true experience, and the restaurant is still operating as I write this in August 2018. It's fun to read the honest online reviews, which for the most part are very positive. After reading the book and being inside Molly's head, you can imagine how she must feel reading the reviews. And for all I know she's written about it on her blog.

What was disappointing - the mostly pedestrian recipes (not one pizza or pizza-related recipe included!) and the photos. Recipes: The book begins with a recipe disclaimer, but why? Don't include recipes just for the sake of having recipes in your book. How many people want a recipe using leftover Chinese takeout rice from a book about birthing a restaurant? Photos: If you don't have compelling photos, don't use them to highlight the chapters as if they were artistic. These black and white photos often looked like nothing more than snapshots that would have worked better as a captioned collection in the middle of the book. ( )

I found this and another book by Molly Wizenberg on my TBR shelf and even though it was my 3rd memoir in a short time,( I'm really an all fiction girl), found it a very good read. I'm also positive though I will continue to cook some, eat a lot, and be merry, instead of ever thinking about running a restaurant! ( )

There are a lot of restaurant books out there, and ,oat of them are alright. This one is different because the author is not a chef, nor was it ever her desire or dream to open a restaurant, and yet somehow she found herself pretty much building one from scratch with her husband. The reason this book was such a treat is because Wizenberg is a)hilarious b) a very self aware, very good writer and c) a foodie with a blog.

The opening chapters of this book were so funny, like laugh out loud-realize that that the others in the room think you are nuts- loud. Then both the story and the restaurant get real. Interspersed with the story of the rest are recipes and the stories behind each of them. This book made the reality of running a resto seem both wonderful and horrible, as it was for the author. Nonetheless if I am ever in Seattle I would love to eat at Delancey! ( )

It may be that when we no longer know what to do, we have come to our real work, and when we no longer know which way to go, we have begun our real journey.  The mind that is not baffled is not employed.  The impeded stream is one that sings.  --WENDELL BERRY
