Key to liking Breakfast at Tiffany's (the book): don't think of the movie. You really have to feel sorry for the other stories that are in the same book as Breakfast at Tiffany's Breakfast at Tiffany's surprised me. My brief initial impression when I began to read the story was 'wackadoodle'. Holly Golightly was very kooky. Paul, the narrator, I envisioned as a version of Truman Capote. This 1958 book would not be for everyone, but I came to love it. I am utterly charmed by it. I really do not recall the film at all, but the novel would not really translate to 1961 cinema without changes. Holly is a wild thing. She is a call girl of a different sort. I thought I had not read Capote before, but there are three additional shorter stories in the book and one of them I recognized. It was quite memorable. 4 stories here, all excellent, with Breakfast the star of the show. I have been thinking that there are a great number of classic works of 20th century fiction that I have never read. This made me want some more. Breakfast at Tiffany's includes the story for which the title of the book is named - - and I would classify it as more of a novella than a short story. There are also three short stories included. Breakfast at Tiffany's is well written and relates the story of a young woman, Holly, through the eyes of her neighbor. Holly is a very multidimensional characters who is beguiling to men and yet who doesn't really seem to know herself at all. This story along with the three others in the book all are connected by a theme of abandonment by a loved and cherished person. Sometimes the abandonment was by choice. Other times it was not. The stories are all good, but I only found Breakfast at Tiffany's to rise above the three star level although they were all enjoyable to read and had something important to say. Short stories are a bit hard to analyze as I don't really read enough of them to compare, but Alice Munroe and Jhumpa Lahiri are my benchmarks, and these stories didn't quite reach their level. ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu
