The second book in The Sundering series, The Godborn does a good job of continuing the separate but loosely intertwined adventures of favorite Forgotten Realms characters. This installment follows the life and destiny of Vasen Cale, the son of Everis Cale, and the forces that are conspiring against him. Like The Champions, you don't need to have read previous books to be able to jump in and follow the story, though I found it to be slightly more difficult to follow in the beginning. The narrations help to build the dark work in which Vasen and company live, though the author's penchant for using a few vague descriptors (e.g. preternatural) lessened the impact of some of the descriptions.

I still have to say I recommend this to anyone with an interest in fantasy novels, and particularly those with even a passing interest in Forgotten Realms or the Dungeons & Dragons universe(s).

This book is set in the D&D gaming world of the Forgotten Realms. There is a lot of upheaval and change in the Realms and this is one of the books that chronicles the massive changes going on. This book picks up after the death of the god Mask. 3 individuals have picked up part of his divine power and must prevent Shar, the goddess of endless dark, from claiming Mask's power. If Shar and her servants can get their hands on the individuals that hold the parts of Mask's power, they can end the world.
This is a 'dark novel'. Not just in style but in setting, as it mostly takes place in the eternal twilight country of Sembia. This was complicated and fascinating, well done, if a bit on the dark side. (

Title: The Godborn Series: The Sundering Author: Paul Kemp Rating: of 5 Battle Axes Genre: SFF Pages: 336 Synopsis: 100 years after the previous Erevis Cale book, his son is being raised by monks of the god of light. Cale is still frozen in hell and the dark goddess Shar is still trying to end the world. Riven is taking Mask's place and Rivalen is still trying to free Shar. The end of the world is in Vasen's hands [Cale's son] but can he do it? My Thoughts: This was a good wrap up to Erevis Cale's story. While he is less than a 2d character, at least he is present and things get wrapped up. Vasen isn't a bad character, but he just doesn't get time to grow on us. Erevis had 6 books, Vasen not even one. This is not a good standalone book, as it won't make much sense without those 6 Erevis Cale books to lay the foundation. I don't think you need to have read the previous Sundering book however. So a pretty good book if you're an Erevis Cale fan but otherwise, just a blase Forgotten Realms book. " (

Ahh, where do I begin? I loved this book. It was not what I was expecting, and apparently its from a series that I've never read before, so I did have some trouble keeping the cast of characters straight, but even with that, I enjoyed this tremendously. I even enjoyed the fighting scenes, which, frankly, in most books I just skim over, but these were delivered in a manner that you could see the swordplay in your mind's eye, just as if you were watching a movie. I enjoyed the characters, although I really wished I was more familiar with the world and the story line coming into it.
