In 1944, blonde and blue-eyed Jewess Hadassah Benjamin feels abandoned by God when she is saved from a firing squad only to be handed over to a new enemy. Pressed into service by SS Kommandant Colonel Aric von Schmidt at the transit camp of Theresienstadt in Czechoslovakia, she is able to hide behind the false identity of Stella Muller. However, in order to survive and maintain her cover as Aric's secretary, she is forced to stand by as her own people are sent to Auschwitz. Suspecting that her employer is a man of hidden depths and sympathies, Stella cautiously appeals to him on behalf of those in the camp. Aric's compassion gives her hope, and she finds herself battling a growing attraction for this man she knows she should despise as an enemy. Stella pours herself into her efforts to keep even some of the camp's prisoners safe, but she risks the revelation of her true identity with every attempt. When her bravery brings her to the point of the ultimate sacrifice, she has only her faith to lean upon. Perhaps God has placed her there for such a time as this, but how can she save her people when she is unable to save herself?… (lisätietoja)

I keep wondering if I should read yet another book about the Holocaust, but I was drawn to this book because of its parallel story of the book of Esther. I was thankful that there was a "happy ending," although it seemed like there wouldn't be when Hadassah thought Aric was dead. ( )

“For Such a Time” by Kate Breslin is quite possibly the best book I have ever read. Each page engages the reader to keep turning pages because this book is so hauntingly beautiful. Never have I felt so close to the characters in any book. The subject matter is a difficult one, the Jewish population of Theresienstadt “Transfer” camp in Czechoslovakia during WW II. The central characters are an SS Kommandant, Aric von Schmidt who has taken a young woman from the firing squad in Dachau and brought her to be his secretary. Unbeknownst to him, she is a Jewish woman with false papers. As Stella (Hadassah) comes to know Aric better, she understands that he is living a life of torment because of the tasks required of him as an SS officer.

Stella tries to help her people by cajoling her boss, Aric into trying to make their lives as prisoners a little better without giving herself away. She has visions of escaping and making a life again. She doesn’t count on falling in love with the enemy.

Without giving anything away, I savored each page I read and became a part of the plot myself. I could envision all that Ms. Breslin wrote about and felt in through my soul. I must admit to tears coursing down my face at times when the brutality and ruthlessness of some of the SS got to my very heart. I tried to slow down my reading because I didn’t want the story to end, but my fascination kept me going and I finished this book too quickly. It’s a book I just want to carry around with me. I cannot say enough good things about Kate Breslin’s work. I have read other books of hers and really hope that she continues to give her readers more of her.

A very good book - an interesting retelling of the story of Esther set in Nazi Germany. ( )

I haven't read this book, and I won't. Therefore, I'm not going to give a rating. But I'm going to say that as a Catholic, the entire premise of this books disgusts me.
I have ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA how anybody could approve of this garbage, or even think that converting someone to their religion is more important than their well being and freedom of choice. The entire concept of a Jewish woman converting to Christianity as some sort of fucking 'redemption arc', like being Jewish is some sort of capital sin, makes me sick.
There's nothing inspiring about someone using their religion to try and justify their bigotry and antisemitic hate, and this is all this book is. I'm ashamed that any Christian found this book even remotely decent.

This is a historical romance (inspirational) between a Nazi Kommandant and a Jewish woman during 1944. It's set in Theresienstadt. It has, as the genre requires, a "happy ending" setup (it's hard to call it a real happy ending. Yes, you read that right.

The book received not one but two RITA nominations in 2015 (RITAs are the awards given by the Romance Writers of America for distinction in the romance genre).

The novel Christianizes its Jewish characters, provides a backstory for an SS officer which is supposed to make him sympathetic, and rewrites the history of Theresienstadt, all in the name of redemption and true love.

I gave this book 1/2 star because 0 stars won't register as a rating. Take it as a given that you do not want to read this book. If you're curious, the sample should give you an idea of what you're in for. ( )
