10% to NGOs#1 BESTSELLING EBOOK IN THE SPANISH-SPEAKING WORLD IN 2013-2016Finalist for the Planeta Prize, the most valuable literary award after the Nobel Prize for Literature (e601,000 / $700,000)"Best Historical Thriller of the year."-novelas-historicasNOTE TO THE 2016 EDITION:Thanks to the novel's historical accuracy and its international success, the city of Crotone-where Pythagoras carried out his remarkable life's work-invited Marcos Chicot to visit in May 2015 and honoured him with the distinction Encomio Solenne for "having given new life to the figure of Pythagoras".Several months later, the novel was again singled out, this time for the acclaimed Mediterranean Culture Award. The author traveled to Italy in October 2015 to accept this prestigious prize. What began as a self-published novel, the attempt of a father to ensure a future for his daughter with Down Syndrome, turned into an overnight publishing sensation. Within a year it was the top-selling ebook in Spanish in the world. Soon afterwards, the paper version became one of the most notable literary events of recent years: a unique novel, highly praised by readers and critics alike, and an extraordinary phenomenon that has been published in twenty countries so far and continues to grow.Synopsis:The venerable philosopher Pythagoras, one of the most powerful political figures of his time, is preparing to name a successor from among his grand masters when a string of murders rocks the Pythagorean community. The killings, each more baffling and unpredictable than the last, gradually unveil the workings of a dark and powerful mind, more formidable than that of Pythagoras himself.Egyptian investigator Akenon and the enigmatic Ariadne work to identify the murderer while at the same time coming to terms with their own tumultuous relationship. The challenge they face is one in which the ghosts of the past are interwoven with the sinister threats of the present: a challenge from which it seems impossible they will escape alive.Killing Pythagoras, based on real-life historical events, will plunge readers into an apparently unsolvable mystery. Readers will unearth cryptic clues and come face to face with some of the most unnerving characters ever to appear in the pages of fiction: Glaucus the Sybarite, the gruesome Boreas, the vengeful Cylon, and above all, the mysterious stranger who wields his prodigious capabilities to sow death."Crime, mystery, and romance in a fast-paced action novel."-Historia National Geographic"Maximum excitement and fun; [the author] achieves a compelling mix of strong elements."-Onda Cero Radio"A fast-paced historical thriller that transports us to the cradle of civilization among intrigues and passion."-La Vanguardia"An edge-of-your-seat narrative driven by suspenseful action, it succeeds in creating a tense atmosphere in the face of the deadly threat that attempts to destroy the main characters."-Qué Leer "The meticulous detail with which the era is recreated gives the novel incredible realism."-Adivina Quién Lee"...it has all the ingredients necessary in a book to hook you: crime, mystery, love, action... I loved it!"-Marianleemaslibros About the Author Marcos Chicot has won many literary prizes, including the Mediterranean Culture Award, the Francisco Umbral Prize for a Novel and the Rotary Club International Literary Award for a Novel.

Fun read, pure escapism and completely OTT. Nonstop action and fast-paced. Set in 510 BC for four months. Pythagoras is running his School of Mathematics and Philosophy. He, his family, and disciples live in a special compound near the town of Croton on the Italian Peninsula. To solve the murder of one of his closest disciples, the so-called "grand masters", he calls in the Egyptian, Akenon, who has come highly recommended. Akenon and Ariadne, the younger daughter of Pythagoras, investigate: he for his general investigative ability and she for any explanations of the Pythagorean doctrine he might need. Several more "grand masters" are killed: two by poison, one by his own hand; and another accused of breaking the Oath of Secrecy is torn limb from limb by his Pythagorean brethren. It is determined a certain masked man [full face mask] is the perpetrator and novel portrays how he is caught and the motives for his crimes, drawing in some of the most totally evil figures at the highest levels of power. I agree with Akenon when some of the mathematics is explained and its importance: "From the beginning, I am lost."

Villains were pure evil. Violence was grisly. Akenon and Ariadne were appealing. Don't read the book as something serious, but think of it, as I did, an exaggeration or caricature of the mystery-adventure genres. Style seemed a bit clunky, possibly because it was a translation--in this case, from the Spanish. From what I know of ancient Greek clothing, I think sometimes when a tunic is mentioned, the author often means a himation: a type of cloak, since he mentions characters wrapping it around their left arm.

Apparently, there will be a sequel. When the mood strikes me for a escapist OTT romp, I may read it. ( )

Despite the off-putting title, Killing Pythagoras is an enjoyable, nerdtastic little romp through a world where mathematics, morality, and money are all mashed together. The idea of using mathematics as part of the plot is intriguing - and I would argue that the author does a rather nice job of creating and exploring a world wherein mathematical principles are treated the way we treat religion and ethics today. I was invested in the fates of the three lead characters and intrigued by the auxiliary villain. The anachronistic use of decimals (which weren't available at the time of Pythagoras) will bother math nerds but might make the mathematics more accessible to the everyday reader. Significant flaws in the formatting are a significant distraction that will affect everyone - I hope that Amazon or the publisher will correct those in the near future. ( )
