It can simply be a habit we do on a regular basis, a matter of tradition and nothing more. Rabbi Grunstein wants us to go deeper into our daily prayer, to make it mean something beyond a blind recitation of words without meaning. Rabbi Grunstein wants us to stop praying like we were children, blindly following the example of our parents or elders, and learn to pray as thinking, devout adults. I think those interested in bringing more soul to their everyday prayers will enjoy this book. Tämä arvostelu kirjoitettiin LibraryThingin Varhaisia arvostelijoita varten. I had high hopes for a book about prayer, but this was not what i was hoping for. There are some useful ideas included, but on the whole, this is addressed towards someone who hasn't thought about prayer since they were young. I particularly disliked how obviously the author did not consider a female reader at all, with all defaults being about men. Also, having recaps at the end of each short chapter and at the end of the book felt like an insult to intelligence.Tämä arvostelu kirjoitettiin LibraryThingin Varhaisia arvostelijoita varten. Most Jews learn prayers by rote, as part of Hebrew school. However, rote memorization without real understanding of what the prayers mean and how they relate to one's adult life can lead to many Jews falling away from the synagogue as they grow older. Rabbi Grunstein attempts to give understanding to the cycle of prayers, more of a "why" than a "how." I have a few quibbles with some of his interpretations, but after all, debate on esoteric matters is part of Jewish tradition. But the premise intrigued me: praying meaningfully and appropriately for your age and stage of life. Let the liturgy and the rules of prayer draw you into a deeper and more intellectual spiritual experience. For readers unfamiliar with Jewish religious practice, a brief explanation is in order. Jewish men — at least the more devout and Orthodox ones — meet to pray for about twenty minutes thrice a day. They use a specific set of prayers (using a prayer book, or siddur) and must comprise a group of at least ten men who have reached the age of 13 (a minyan). Rabbi Grunstein noticed that many adults still prayed as they had upon graduating from Hebrew school in their youth. They seemed disconnected from the inner experience of prayer, and often acted as if daily prayer was simply another thing to cross off the daily to-do list. As a rabbi, he was concerned by this lack of connection to the spiritual life, and realized that modern men needed to understand how these ancient prayer rituals could be relevant to their daily lives. "Daven Your Age" takes the rituals of “davening” and offers an adult approach. The first two parts discuss specific meaning in rituals surrounding the daily prayer services, specifically addressing why the minyan is important and why men should try to participate, how the minyan contributes to a sense of culture and community. Parts three, four, and five address the specific prayers of the daily service, with special attention to the Amida. Each prayer is carefully analyzed and its importance and applicability to adult life are examined. In the end, a thrice-daily ritual that might easily become just another “to-do" on the devout man’s list becomes instead a vital, meaningful service performed, not for the individual’s benefit, but for the good of the world, the country, and the community. Rabbi Grunstein's "Daven Your Age" is a valuable and encouraging guide for those who want to deepen their understanding of and engagement in the daily prayer service. Rabbi Grunstein has given an exciting option to prayer for the Jewish community, in this interesting and knowledgable book, Daven Your Age. The reviewer is not Jewish, so many terms needed to be researched in order to understand some of the concepts and beliefs. But the overall message received was that Jewish prayer can relatedto current times and can be uplifting and fulfilling in the spiritual life of the faithful. This book is recommended to all people. It's concepts can be beneficial to all faiths.
Jews spend endless hours of their lives in prayer, yet many Jews view prayer as an obligation to strike off the schedule rather than enjoy and be uplifted by. Since we generally don t learn about prayer past grade school, we often find ourselves praying with the intellectual awareness of fifth graders and we therefore find prayers to be meaningless and empty. This book bridges that very gap connecting the mind to the heart by allowing the laws of prayer, which people know so well, to influence the experience of praying in ways that have not yet been explored.
