Similar to the book Uptown I read earlier in the semester, this book is about a girl's life in the city. She tells stories of "Moe's", "The Cool Pool", "The Laundromat", and "The City Market" along with other places around the city that she visits. It is a journey into the girl's life through her eyes of the city she lives in. This is a entertaining book that students will enjoy. Carole Weatherford did nice work with this book. ( ) Sidewalk Chalk is a compilation of poems. The poems all take place in a very large city. The poems are about people of the city and their everyday lives. Some examples are children playing jumping rope, writing on the sidewalk with chalk, and even the city barbershop. I love the poems are about everyday life. This is a great collection of poems about the city. They are all about different things in the city from all children's point of view. Some of these things are sidewalk chalk, the laundromat, or the pool. This book is also very diverse, it includes many different types of people doing the activities and doing them together. The illustrations in this book really make the poems come alive. If the illustrations were not so detailed and colorful I would probably not care for this book. This is a great book that has a large variety of poems. Many of the poems in this book rhyme and are in ABAB format, while others do not rhyme at all. My favorite part about this book is that all the poems are related to one topic. Each page discusses a different topic or event that takes place in the city. This would be a great book of poems to read to a group of students that does not live in the city in order to teach them about everyday things that occur in big cities. The poems in this book are about experiences children have in the city including playing with chalk, eating at the local diner, going to the city pool, getting their hair cut, going to the city market, doing laundry at the laundromat, and going to church. The illustrations in this book are bright and cheerful. They depict the diversity of the city including African American kids, white kids, kids in wheelchairs, and both young and old people. Many of the poems rhyme which make them easier to read. ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu
