This was the book that I needed to read at this specific time. I think you'll know in the first few pages if that's true for you as well. I'm not sure how it would read to someone who didn't need to read it at that specific time in their life, but the timing was right for me, and it was a solid, beautiful thing for that. ( ![]() Once again, Murakami creates a startling world and themes that grabbed but disturbed me. Murakami always sends his characters on interesting adventures. Trust the Japanese to be able to sum up and put into words the listlessness the changes between adolescence and adulthood engender. "Mono no aware." There's a lot of deep reflection in the book. However it does somewhat suffer in translation to he west as the characters are a little stilted and things left unresolved.
This is a book for both the new and experienced reader. It has a strange casualness, as if it unfolded as Murakami wrote it; at times, it seems like a prequel to a whole other narrative. The feel is uneven, the dialogue somewhat stilted, either by design or flawed in translation. Yet there are moments of epiphany gracefully expressed, especially in regard to how people affect one another.
