Wat mij betreft een waardige afsluiter.
Geen overdreven spektakel of extra verweven verhaallijnen zoals in de vorige delen. Maar juist een recht toe, recht aan verhaal waarbij alles uit de voorgaande delen in dit ene boek helder en zelfs rustig wordt uitgespeeld. Ik kan me zo voorstellen dat een schrijver zich juist bij zo'n conclusie zich makkelijk laat verleiden om zich helemaal te laten gaan en alles uit de kast trekt. Daarom heb ik er zo'n bewondering voor dat Michael Moorcock dat in dit deel juist niet gedaan heeft.
Terwijl ik het zat te lezen, realiseerde ik me dat ik het verhaal op zich niet eens zo heel erg intrigerend vind. Wel vermakelijk en boeiend genoeg om te willen volgen maar niet super speciaal. Daar zal ik dan ook verder niets over zeggen.
Er is iets anders waardoor ik telkens weer terugkom bij deze auteur en zijn multiversum. Dat iets zit hem in de sfeer die hij door zijn heldere schrijfstijl weet te creëren. Een omgeving die vertrouwd aanvoelt, die een waarheid in zich bergt over het bestaan zonder dat dit rechtstreeks benoemd wordt. Een waarheid die in het echte leven ontkend wordt en door deze nu hier te lezen, ik me juist begrepen voel. Dan kan de buitenkant van het verhaal zelfs wel middelmatig zijn maar is dat wat op onbewust niveau raakt zo juist dat het weer waardevol wordt.
Ik kan me indenken dat dit lang niet bij iedere lezer zo zal werken. Bij gaat het wel zo en daarom staat hij bovenin mijn lijstje met door mij meest gewaardeerde schrijvers. (
