Leggendo questo libretto si vede facilmente il passare del tempo: sia nella traduzione di Maria Spoglianti che risente dei quasi sessant'anni - chi scriverebbe ancora "dicesi" per cominciare una definizione? - sia per la gestione dei vari insiemi di numeri, che stranamente lascia da parte le costruzioni di Dedekind e accenna ai risultati di Cantor solo in modo per così dire quantitativo. Dal punto di vista prettamente matematico, direi che la parte migliore è quella dove viene dimostrata l'esistenza di numeri trascendenti con i teoremi sulle approssimazioni sfruttati da Liouville, anche se a questo punto mi sarei aspettato qualcosa sulle frazioni continue.
C'è però qualcosa che rende comunque la lettura piacevole, e sono le considerazioni di Niven, che scrive esplicitamente che il suo approccio nel testo tende a lasciare dimostrazioni non perfettamente rifinite. Questo non perché lui ritenga che le dimostrazioni non siano importanti - è un matematico, in fin dei conti! - quanto perché credeva che c'è un tempo per la precisione e un tempo per la formazione delle idee matematiche, e il suo libro fa parte di quest'ultimo tempo.
