Here's what Amanda Taub wrote (NYT Interpreter Newsletter, July 16, 2021):
Thanks to a long plane ride, I finally read “The Goldfinch,” by Donna Tartt, which has been on my reading list since it came out in 2014. I was most struck by how tight the book seemed, which is surprising because it is approximately 8,000 pages long. But to an astonishing degree, almost every person named and event offhandedly mentioned ended up being relevant to the mechanics of the plot, giving it an air of taut inevitability despite its sprawling narrative and geographical settings.

I read the e-book so I have no idea how big this book was, but I'm thinking it must've been a chunkster considering it took me a week of hardcore reading time to get through it. Meaning, every spare moment of time that I had. Before work, after work, lunch break, etc.

I loved this book so much! Boris and Hobie are two of the best characters that have come along in a long time.

Theo...made a lot of dumb decisions, but he didn't have a lot of guidance in his life so it's understandable.

Pippa...can we have another book that tells us all about Pippa from her point of view?

Popchyk !!!!!!! How many times was I worried sick over that doggo?

Loved all the detail that went into the book. Really, really amazing. I can see why it took Donna Tartt 10 years to write it. Just ordered myself a hardcover because it's definitely one I want on my Favorites shelf. ( )

Dicken, Dickens, Dickens
I carefully avoided reading reviews of this book until I had finished.
But the notes I wrote while reading it kept coming back to Dickens, and I gather I was not alone.
What does this book share with Dickens? A young boy with a difficult start in life who then has to work his way through the vicissitudes of contemporary society. Strongly drawn characters, almost caricatures, who represent splendidly the salient features of that society. Splendidly engaging storytelling. And episodic construction where the plot moves forward in abrupt dislocations. The parallels are very striking.
Well, I am very fond of Dickens so I like this a lot too. It would've been five stars if not for the fact that it is admittedly too long and too repetitive at times. ( )

I certainly loved the sweep of the story. It is worthy of five stars. Two quibbles: First, I had to read much more than I wanted to about people awaking in a pool of vomit each morning. Second, had I been the editor, I think I could have pared this book to about 500 pages with no loss of its grand sweep. ( )

In an utterly compelling novel, written in the form of a memoir by the protagonist, Theo Decker, Donna Tartt records his life from the age of 13 to his late 20s, starting in the early 2000s. It investigates his life after the sudden death on his mother, to whom he was devoted, and his subsequent relocation from New York to Las Vegas when he is reunited with his divorced father and a new step-mother. But all the time, something is gnawing away at Theo, from his seemingly innocent taking and hiding of an important painting, to his fraught relationship with his father, his reliance on alcohol and drugs, to his troubled friendship with Bruno, and the calming influence of the older Hobie in New York.
Although a long novel at over 700 pages, Tartt retains your attention as Theo’s experiences give him an insight into the wrongs that he has committed and as he eventually attempts to make good for them and to find a peace after his turbulent adolescence. However, chance, fate and the unexpected appear at intervals in Theo’s life and leave him with the uncertainty that stability is necessarily the right manner to live his future. This makes for a thoroughly absorbing read that demands your concentration and interest throughout.

Good things are worth waiting for. . . a tour de force that will be among the best books of 2013.

It’s my happy duty to tell you that in this case, all doubts and suspicions can be laid aside. “The Goldfinch” is a rarity that comes along perhaps half a dozen times per decade, a smartly written literary novel that connects with the heart as well as the mind. I read it with that mixture of terror and excitement I feel watching a pitcher carry a no-hitter into the late innings. You keep waiting for the wheels to fall off, but in the case of “The Goldfinch,” they never do.

It seemed like the kind of room where a call girl or a stewardess would be murdered on television.
He's telling you that living things don't last--it's all temporary. Death in life. That's why they're called natures mortes. Maybe you don't see it at first with all the beauty and bloom, the little speck of rot. But if you look closer--there it is.
Every new event--everything I did for the rest of my life--would only separate us more and more: days she was no longer a part of, an ever-growing distance between us. Every single day for the rest of my life, she would only be further away.
But sometimes, unexpectedly, grief pounded over me in waves that left me gasping; and when the waves washed back, I found myself looking out over a brackish wreck which was illumined in a light so lucid, so heartsick and empty, that I could hardly remember that the world had ever been anything but dead.
When I looked at the painting I felt the same convergence on a single point: a flickering sun-struck instant that existed now and forever. Only occasionally did I notice the chain on the finch's ankle, or think what a cruel life for a little living creature--fluttering briefly, forced always to land in the same hopeless place.
