This is sweet. I think Addison is a reincarnation of Odd Thomas, or vice versa. The most evil is human, and that works for me in monster stories. The ending wasn't what I expected but it was very satisfactory. ( )

It now seems that Dean Koontz' transformation is complete. And into a completely and totally different kind of writer. No longer the horror novel author who dabbled in the supernatural while measly hinting at the spiritual side of life, Koontz has, in the past few years, improved tremendously. I had not read a novel of his since 77 Shadow Street, which had struck me as lop-sided and long-winded at the time, I decided to try again. The last couple short stories reminded me of what I had loved about Koontz' writing, oh so long ago, when he first started writing. So I gave Innocence a try, trusting Koontz not to let me down. I was very right to do so.

This is a difficult book to describe in terms of genre, though there are distinct tinges of horror, a genre I occasionally stray from because it tends to tap into the mundanities of life and glorify that, despite the extraordinary events that take place in their pages. Aside from the breathtakingly beautiful writing, I noticed early on that this somehow transcends those aforementioned mundanities, so while the places and time may be familiar, reading 'Innocence' was almost like being transported into another world. The same can be said of Addison Goodheart, the main character/narrator, who is depicted as an outcast for reasons that will not be made clear until the ending, as his insight and luminous mind seem to separate him from ordinary humanity surely as does his "deformity".

Koontz weaves a captivating tale of Addison and the seemingly troubled Gwyneth, whose lives are somehow connected, and who he must help and protect at all costs from the man responsible for her father's murder. While the plot was light in certain instances, like when Addison found himself in love with someone he'd JUST MET....... much of the book revolves around how Addison's past is leading him to their present life together, and the crumbs of supernatural the author throws for us are completely spellbinding. Along the way, the book is spiced with some very erudite observances regarding the modern world, and the connections to darkness in which they spring from.

I have literally been left astounded by this book. And the ending.....? How could I have missed all the clues??? I spent half the night going back to reread certain parts, which now make MUCH more sense.
From not being much impressed (and possibly turned off) by the book I read a few short years ago, this is now an author whose works will be sought out ravenously. I agree with Koontz in his assurances that this is his favorite novel, and possibly his best work.
This book comes highly recommended, and a very high 4.5 stars! ( )

Overall, a good read. As with most of his more recent stories, it's a bit mystical, a bit philosophical and a tiny mystery at the heart of it. The main character is different and for 3/4 of the story the cause of this difference is hinted at, alluded to but not defined. That has the result of being a distraction to the main part of the story as I found myself focused on imagining what the guy looked like. Overall, I'd recommend this book. It is an unusual reading which allowed me to guess almost until the end.
Addison Goodheart is an unusual person. The midwife wanted to kill him shortly after birth, but the mother kept it with him for eight years before putting him out the door. When he arrived in the big city, he was picked up by a man whom he called Father. He has the same extraordinary looks as Addison. Therefore, they can only leave the underground at night. Father was already six years dead when this story began. It is told in the now and in the past. Addison encounters Gwyneth, who shares a similar fate as he does, except that her father had a lot of money and she does not need to hide in the underground because she has enough flats / houses available. Addison and Gwyneth are a kind of do-gooder who think of others first, rather than themselves. They can not leave injustices and must eliminate them. A priest helps them. ( )

This book is dedicated to Harry Recard for being a friend, for teaching me pinochle in college and thereby ruining my academic career. And to Diane Recard for taking such good care of Harry all these years, an exhausting task.
