At Gram's Country Cooking School, Isabelle "Betts" Winston and her grandmother share their home-style culinary secrets. But what they keep to themselves are the secrets of Broken Rope, a quiet little Missouri town, that isn't nearly as quiet as it seems. A fresh school year begins as Gram and Betts anxiously await the arrival of their new crop of students. But their enthusiasm is thwarted when a stranger named Freddie O'Bannon arrives and claims to have proof that he was accepted to the school despite what is in their files. And when the ghost of Cylas Gent, a young man who might have a romantic past with Gram, also appears, there are suddenly two mysteries demanding their attention. But just as Gram and Betts start sifting through the past, one of their new students is murdered. Does the seemingly sweet Freddie O'Bannon have something sinister to hide, or are Gram's ghosts trying to teach her a lesson? Either way, it's up to the country cooks to catch a killer before another living soul gets burned.… (lisätietoja)

If Bread Could Rise is the third book in the A Country Cooking School Mystery series. I enjoy both of Shelton's series, but I think this has become my favorite and one of my favorite "ghost" books, too.

A new class is about to begin and one of the first to show up is Freddie O'Bannion, but he doesn't he doesn't seem to be registered, even though he has a letter showing acceptance by Grams. As Betts and Grams are getting to know the students, Betts thinks it is strange that one students, Brenda, seems to be taking a lot of notes and class hasn't even started yet. Their first item they are to prepare for school is Sourdough Bread. Everyone starts a sourdough starter and shortly after, Roger is found dead in front of the school. Apparently he has been poisoned. But who could have done it? Blame immediately falls to Freddie, but both Grams and Betts want to be sure before accusing him.

The part that I most enjoy about the series is the various ghosts that appear in each book looking for help. Jerome is back again to look after Grams and Betts, as he has in the first two books. Jerome can best be described at as a "guardian ghost". Gent Cylas is the ghost that is looking for answers to his death. Gent and his family had died in a fire at the Kennington Bakery, but there is no record of their being in the bakery and noting about where they disappeared to. Gent, who was a good boyhood friend of Grams, would like for this mystery to be solved. Jake the archivist for Broken Rope and the only one to know about the towns ghost, is back to help Betts deal with the spirits.

In the romance department, things a going fine with Betts and Cliff. Her main concern deals with how much information about the towns ghosts she should share with Cliff

I'm looking forward to the next book in this exciting series. ( )

A fun series, and this book was a fun read. With each book bringing a new ghost with it's own mystery, along with current day murder mysteries, the story lines stay fresh and interesting.

Taking place in an old wild-west town turned tourist destination known for being overly haunted by ghosts, it's a fun setting. I like Bettes but will admit to having a hard time warming up to Grams - she doesn't feel quite three dimensional to me. Or maybe I just don't care for her personality. Jake is a great bff/sidekick and the romance with her old high school sweetheart is sweet. But the author has done something interesting; she's managed to introduce a love triangle that really isn't. Now, I HATE love triangles, but this one, I get a kick out of it and the author has possibly created a sexual tension that can be kept going indefinitely throughout the series, without getting stale. Time will tell.

The murder mysteries were cleverly done (both of them) and well plotted. I didn't have any idea until the end and it was a fairly good ending as well.

I look forward to more from this series. A genuine enjoyment to read. ( )

A new school year is beginning at Gram and Bett's Country Cooking school, bringing with it an additional student and murder. Between the modern day Broken Rope mystery, this outing's ghostly bakery mystery and Bett's love life, it wasn't easy to figure out the who done it. Although I definitely enjoy these books and Shelton's writing style, I think this series needs to probably not have a love triangle with a ghost and could step up Gram's character a bit. Miz is a true character and I thought it was uncharacteristic of her to take such a reclining role this time out. ( )
