Before he is known as the Babe, George Herman Ruth is just a boy who lives in Baltimore and gets into a lot of trouble. But when he turns seven, his father brings him to the gates of Saint Mary's Industrial School for Boys, and his life is changed forever. At Saint Mary's, he's expected to study hard and follow a lot of rules. But there is one good thing about Saint Mary's: almost every day, George gets to play baseball. Here, under the watchful eye of Brother Matthias, George evolves as a player and as a man, and when he sets off into the wild world of big-league baseball, the school, the boys, and Brother Matthias are never far from his heart. With vivid illustrations and clear affection for his subject, Matt Tavares sheds light on an icon who learned early that life is what you make of it and sends home a message about honoring the place from which you came.… (lisätietoja)

Before Babe Ruth became Babe Ruth, George was just a little boy who grew up as a trouble maker in Baltimore. When George turned seven, his father enrolled him in Saint Mary's Industrial School for Boys where George felt like an inmate besides when he was allowed to play baseball. Saint Mary transformed George from a boy into a man through baseball. Even after George's baseball career took off, he never forgot where he came from. This heartfelt and inspiring biography of Babe Ruth delivers a message to never forget their roots. ( )

When Babe Ruth was a little boy, he was sent to Saint Mary's Industrial School for Boys. This is where he begins to learn how to play baseball. Babe Ruth spends countless hours learning how to pitch, how to turn a double play, how to pick off a runner as well as learning how to play every other position on the field. One day the owner of the minor-league Baltimore Orioles comes to Saint Mary's to watch Babe Ruth play and offered him a contract. After playing with the Orioles, he then played for the Boston Red Sox and later the New York Yankees, where he becomes one of the biggest celebrities in America. The biography is organized in a way that explains the hard work that Babe Ruth put into the sport of baseball that made him into one of the best baseball players known today. I really liked this story because baseball is something that is interesting to me. It gives the message of hard work ethic can bring you great things. ( )

I am not a baseball fan, but I have heard of Babe Ruth growing up I didn't know much about him just that he was a very good baseball player. After reading this i learned more about him. His real name is George, he lived in Baltimore and was a trouble maker his parents send him off to Saint Mary’s Industrial School for Boys . As he grows at his new school, playing baseball everyday, he learns discipline and determination. Once he makes it to the big-leagues he did not forget about the boys and teachers who had once helped him get to what he is today. ( )

Becoming Babe Ruth, tells the story of George Herman Ruth. George grew up in Baltimore, where he liked to skip school and get into trouble. His father sent him to St. Mary's at age 7. St. Mary's is compared to living in a prison, with strict rules and a structured schedule. George only likes one thing about St. Mary's and that is playing baseball. Brother Matthias takes time to teach George how to play every position of the baseball field. George becomes one of the best baseball players of all time. Fans start referring to the young new talent as "Babe Ruth." Babe never forgets where he grew up, and often visits Brother Matthias and St. Mary's school, until a tragic fire burns down the school. Babe helps rebuild his former home and never forgets the school that built him into the best player of all time. ( )
