"Space opera the way it ought to be [...] Bujold and Weber, bend the knee; interstellar adventure has a new king, and his name is Walter Jon Williams." -- George R.R. Martin Following The Praxis, Walter Jon Williams' critically-acclaimed mix of space opera and military science fiction, the conflict grows for the fate of humanity...and the universe. The Dread Empire of the Shaa is no more, following the death of the last oppressor. But freedom remains elusive for the myriad sentient races enslaved for ten centuries, as an even greater terror arises. The Naxids--a powerful insectoid species themselves subjugated until the recent Shaa demise--plan to fill the vacuum with their own bloody domination, and have already won a shattering victory with superior force and unimaginable cruelty. But two heroes survived the carnage at Magaria: Lord Gareth Martinez and the fiery, mysterious gun pilot Lady Caroline Sula, whose courageous exploits are becoming legend in the new history of galactic civil war. Yet their cunning, skill, and bravery may be no match for the overwhelming enemy descending upon the loyalist stronghold of Zanshaa, as the horrific battle looms that will determine the structure of the universe--and who shall live to inhabit it--for millennia to come.… (lisätietoja)

Didn't have my heart pounding like the first book. I enjoyed the action and even the very calculated separation of our male and female heroes. Husband has misplaced the third book -- aaugh! ( )

Great space opera, continuing the first book of the trilogy. Adventures involving space combats, some strong willed characters that must navigate a somehow rigid social structure, but manage due to their wits and abilities. The first book of the series should be read before this one as it gives a lot of background information. The action keeps exciting and the characters seem natural in how they think and act. The imagined world keeps believable although it does not go too deep into many details except the focus of the novels (old fashion military hierarchy and stellar combat at speeds under speed of light but with large accelerations possible). Williams, Walter Jon. The Sundering. Dread Empire’s Fall No. 3. HarperTorch, 2003.
In this second installment of Dread Empire’s Fall, there are bigger battles and more intense romantic passions. The battle descriptions are as good as anything in Honor Harrington novels, and the romance is less PG than we in Bujold’s worlds. We can see how much Williams wants to complicate the politics and species diversity of his empire. Again, we are kept moving through the story by our interest in our protagonists, Lady Sula and Gareth Martinez. Each character, for different reasons, has trouble figuring out where they stand in the new dispensation and with each other. Don’t expect all the issues to be resolved yet, but don’t let that deter you from enjoying their uncertainty. This is good space opera. ( )

The second book in this space opera quadrology really takes off. The first has its fair share of space battles and idiotic commanders and a wealth of character building for our two main heroes, but the second book does them both real justice (thanks to the foundation of the first).

I honestly got rather excited that they might have gotten together. The team seemed rather unbeatable in the face of so much incompetence and tradition-hugging. But where the story went (to hell, basically,) was also pretty great.

There seems to be one enormous plotline that practically all these space operas follow. Idiocy, main characters who aren't idiots, a full crash-course featuring an invasion, and then a long space war that coincides with a lengthy ground siege. Some are written well, some aren't, but this one seems to have all its ducks in a row. I'm invested in both. :)

This series definitely has one of the biggest, most thoroughly thought-out, widest collection of worldbuilding I've seen in a mil-SF. It might not be as amusing as some, as flashy as others, or as deliciously character-oriented as, say, Bujold, but when all these different pieces (and more) come together in a single work, I can't help but be rather impressed.

And I am.

I've read MUCH worse. :) ( )

Title: The Sundering
Series: Dread Empires Fall #2
Author: Walter Jon Williams
Rating: 3 of 5 Stars
Genre: SF
Pages: 454
Format: Digital edition

Synopsis:

Plucky young hero, Gareth Martinez, wins battles against the horrible Naxids using unthought of tactics using “mathz”.His terrible older brother schemes to make lots of money and gain power.

Plucky young heroine, Caroline Sula, who is really a street rat, wants to marry Gareth. Gareth wants to marry her. But the damnable Gene Checking Office kills her dreams like a fly. In fear and distress, Sula spurns Gareth only to have Gareth's older brother (the power hungry one, in case you missed it) arrange a marriage for Gareth with a beautiful woman from a powerful, but poor, Clan house. Sula, with broken heart, joins the French Foriegn Legion, to forget her troubles. Well, she actually joins the newly birthed anti-Naxid force, to oppose them when they take over the capital world.

The Drama. The Pathos. Find out what happens to them both in our next episode of General Dread Empire Hospital!

My Thoughts:

Pure Space (Soap) Opera.

I've read enough Jack Campbell Lost Fleet books to know that new tactics against stodgy old tactics almost always means insta-victory. There is nothing wrong with that as long as that is all you want. Because that is all you're going to get with this book. Gareth is not a genius, he's just trying out new things against people who aren't used to new things. In 5 to 10 years everybody will be trying out new things and seeing what works and writing new military engagement doctrines.

Sula brought this book down for me. Her knee-jerk reaction to Gareth's proposal and revelation that they'd have to have a gene check wasn't enjoyable to read about. The parts of the story where she's fighting the Naxid as they take control of the capital planet was much better and I wish there had been a lot more focus on that part of things.

Overall, this was pretty decent. Nothing great, nothing inspired but also nothing terrible. If you're craving Space Opera, I'd recommend this to scratch that itch.
