A rogue ruined...He is the Killer Duke, accused of murdering Mara Lowe on the eve of her wedding. With no memory of that fateful night, Temple has reigned over the darkest of London's corners for twelve years, wealthy and powerful, but beyond redemption. Until one night, Mara resurfaces, offering the one thing he's dreamed of...absolution. A lady returned...Mara planned never to return to the world from which she'd run, but when her brother falls deep into debt at Temple's exclusive casino, she has no choice but to offer Temple a trade that ends in her returning to society and proving to the world what only she knows...that he is no killer.… (lisätietoja)

This romance made for easy reading and was just what I needed. The two central characters, Temple and Mara, are both flawed people and initially intend to use each other to their own ends. Instead, they fall in love, in between witty retorts and evasions about the past. I've really enjoyed this series and I'm looking forward to the next installment. ( )

Now here's the good stuff. Yeah, man. Maybe more than most genres a romance novel is satisfying to a reader when it contains the tropes that they specifically enjoy. And since I really enjoy giant bruiser types that seem like brutes but are nice and funny and actually really like and respect women separate from wanting to bone them, I loved Temple. I also loved Mara, since she was tough and independent and at one point punched Bourne in the face, which he deserved because he's kind of a tool. I also liked the central conceit of the romance, since as a device to keep them apart until the end it made more sense than a lot of the tired reasons used in other books ("I can't be with this woman because I've been such a sexy, naughty boy and don't deserve this precious, unsoiled angel! Let's angst about this for three hundred pages while dry-humping in closets!").

Of course, all of the good points of the novel were amplified by my liking these particular tropes and if you don't like these specific romance archetypes, you might be more cognizant of how the book dragged a little in the end and how hard they kept beating the drum of Chase's mysteriousness (look, she's a woman, it was clear from book one, she's a sexy woman gambling-hall owner that's sexy and sneaky and great). Chase gets the next book, which is very exciting and not just because poor Maclean won't have to feverishly avoid using pronouns whenever she's in a scene as Chase. Also, Chase, my girl, did you totally spend a scene just openly watching Temple take a bath? You filthy bird, you. ( )

I liked both Temple and Mara as characters and their story was mostly enjoyable. The conflict between them has the foundation of being a good, legitimate conflict--how could you forgive someone for (albeit, accidentally) framing you for her murder and destroying your life? But instead of being justifiably driven by hurt and anger, Temple is overwhelmingly kind and forgiving. With barely a pretext of anger, he moves on to desiring and wanting to know Mara and being quite kind to her. I was angrier on his behalf than he was. The poor man was mistreated and deceived by not only Mara, but also one of his oldest friends and he forgives them both. He forgives them even though they both allowed him to believe himself a murderer for 12-years. That should have been fuel for much greater conflict and anguish.

I liked Mara despite her shortcomings, but her reasons for keeping the truth from Temple were BAD. I realize the author was trying to make the conflict linger, but it made no earthly sense why Mara would not have told Temple the truth about the money, about the night she fled, about whether or not they had actually had sex. He was never really mean to her; it was very clear he was generous with his money and that he wouldn't have allowed orphans to suffer; and he was entitled to the missing piece of his own past. Yet, she wouldn't tell him! It was cruel. And then when (trying to avoid spoilers) she makes him a promise to stay and then LEAVES . . . . ! He should not have gone after her. He didn't need to prove himself to her. She needed to prove herself to him. I was disappointed that Temple seemed to do all of the emotional, physical, and romantic work in this story. He deserved a better partner.

I, for one, loved this book. I am sick of goody two shoes heroines and sparkly romances. Finally something darker, a little angrier (although the book still follows all of the genre rules). I think a large motivator for the negative opinions of Mara, aside from rightly judging her for framing a man for murder, is because she's not as easily digestible as a heroine--meaning she sticks up for herself and doesn't immediately fall at the hero's feet. I can smell the sexism from a mile away: Mara's character gets ripped apart, reviewers call her a whore, "fucking trollop" (lol), and more, but there are countless novels where the hero is the one with the awful past, and those same people write it off as a redemption arc, his being an alpha male, etc.

I normally don't write reviews, but I felt compelled to say something. I almost didn't read this because of the vitriol here. Makes me think I should stop reading the reviews altogether, as they either skew incredibly positive or horribly negative (with a few gifs thrown in to make it seem cute and light, instead of a non constructive review).

Pros: older heroine, no large age gap, darker story, cute pig

Cons: I could tell you the order of the sex scenes in almost every Sarah MacLean novel, as well as the percent of the way through they come up as. Mix it up, ma'am! Consider also trimming some of the internal dialogue. It gets repetitive, even using the same phrases in the same order in the same series of thoughts. Gives me deja vu. ( )

I absolutely adored this book. I'd been dying to know the Killer Duke's story and it absolutely did not disappoint. These books are such fun little romps. The heroines are smart and sassy. The heroes are rugged and total pushovers for the women they love. I highly recommend this series to everyone. Oh and I most definitely just pre-ordered the fourth book in this series as that little snippet at the end totally got me wanting to know Chase's story! ( )
