Sten Duncan, having saved the lives of the last two of humanity's deadliest enemies, the mri, is now faced with the task of delivering the brother and sister to a legendary lost planet--the only place in the cosmos where they might have a chance to survive.
"The Faded Sun: Shon'Jir" is the second book in CJ Cherryh's Faded Sun trilogy.
Duncan has a mission, involving the mri, but he knows that betrayal by his own people is part of his mission. How he handles life among the mri while trying to keep with his commander's orders makes a very good read, and continuation of the first book. Duncan (and we) learn more about the mri, about their customs, their history, and their chances of a future...a future in doubt, with two species bent on destroying them.
I got lost, again, in Ms. Cherryh's world, and am looking forward to doing it again in the third and final installment, "The Faded Sun: Kutath".

"You have chosen your service." "Yes," he said. "With the People, she'pan." And when she still stared at him, troubled by his treachery: "On their side, she'pan, there are so many kel'ein one will not be missed. But on the side of the People, there is only one - twice that, with me. Humankind will not miss one kel'en." Melein's eyes held to his, painfully intense. "Your mathematics is without reproach, kel Duncan."
