This was the darkest tale in the series so far, but utterly beautiful at the same time. Absolutely loved it. ( ) These aren’t the fairytales you were told as a child. Dark and utterly compelling Marie Hall’s Kingdom series has captivated me from the start. As soon as I found out about Wolf’s story I was instantly intrigued. Little Red Riding Hood has always been one of my favorite fairytales so I really wanted to Wolf’s (Ewan) story. I was not disappointed! The twist she put on this tale was imaginative and I was extremely excited to see Violet, who portrayed Red, not as some scared little girl, but a kick butt heroine. The world building was beautiful and very descriptive. I am continually being surprised every time I read one of these books as we get to know more and more about the different lands in this world. Although Violets’s world was a little more dangerous than some it was also frighteningly beautiful. The romance was done nicely and I liked how Ewan the wolf in this story was both hard and gentle at the same time. He respected Violet and did his best to protect her, but not lie to her. He didn’t treat her as some ignorant girl who should do as she was told with no questions. He loved her attitude and all which was a good thing because after what she had been through Violet needed to learn to trust again. Violet was a tough and independent woman who unfortunately had been lied to for most of her life. It is because of this that she finds it hard to trust anyone. However, despite her outward show of disinterest deep down she has a heart of gold. She also can’t seem to help her frightening attraction to her new companion. Ewan was a mystery to her. She believed him to be a villain, but he had continuously shown her kindness and affection. I highly recommend this dark new fairytale! This is the 3rd in the delightful Kingdom series by Marie Hall. I do need to mention that Marie graciously asked me to beta read this book, and that was a true treat. This book continues to follow the story of the “bad boys of faerie tales”, and while Miriam is consistently the one character that is recurring regularly: her part in the saga is easy to discover and follow. I think I liked this even more than Her Mad Hatter, probably because the points of view and action are a little less frenetic , without the Mad Hatter as the primary narrator. Taking the story of Little Red Riding Hood and integrating it with other faerie tales into a romantic story where the bad boys find their own happily ever after is a task that the author managed with finesse and humor. While the initial response often is to refer to these stories as we would when we first encountered them – this is a backstory and alternate that sits far closer (In my opinion) to the darkness of the original tales penned by the Grimm brothers. Not that these stories are dark, but they carry their own bits of tension and dramatic angst that make the conclusions more satisfying. As a single story, or as a series read – these will delight and bring a smile – perhaps encouraging you to seek out all of the stories that have combined to create the world in which the Kingdom exists. I received an eBook copy from author for purpose of honest review for the goodreads group “Lovers of Paranormal”. I was not compensated for this review, and all conclusions are my own responsibility. Note: I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. As memories return Violet’s life is not what she thought. Born a child of the dark she is thrown back into a fairy tale world right into the arms of her supposed enemy. Ewan found her at last and she is everything he had ever wanted, the only problem now is to make her not hate him. Continuing on with this fairy tale series Maria Hall once again did not disappoint in the construction of the characters. I loved the interactions with Hatter and Alice in them; Hall did a wonderful job bringing them back into the story. Violet and Ewan had a great deal of chemistry. I did however not like the parts between Danika and Miriam. Even though those parts did end up explaining a lot I wanted to skip over those parts and get back to Violet and Ewan. The only think about Ewan that bugged me was his accent, I found it to be kind of annoying, but then again I don't think accents translate very well onto paper.
