Rileggere gli indifferenti a circa 40 anni ha un effetto particolare. I ricordi, chiaramente sfumati, della lettura di un ragazzino che si avvicinava ad un libro troppo importante per lui scritto da un autore che sembrava, allora, inaccessibile. Ora, letti Celine, Joyce, Pasolini, Kafka, Mann, gli indifferenti è un romanzo dell’inizio del secolo scorso di un autore che è stato un punto di riferimento per la cultura italiana per quasi un secolo. “Gli indifferenti” è un romanzo di maniera che esponendo la storia di Carla e Michela, due fratelli della buona borghesia romana, e delle loro famiglie evidenzia il tema della noia e dell’assenza di valori. La madre dei due ragazzi, Mariagrazia, una donna annoiata, ha un amante, Leo, che punta all’acquisto della villa di famiglia. E al contempo corteggia la figlia Carla. Quando Michele comprende le intenzioni dell’uomo entra in casa per affrontarlo con la pistola in pugno per difendere l’onore delle sue donne. Ma la pistola è scarica e Michele appare per quello che è, un uomo debole, privo di valori, indifferente. La storia si conclude con il matrimonio tra Leo e Carla che garantirà all’uomo la villa di famiglia e il benessere sociale alla donna. Il libro è un duro atto di denuncia rispetto alla borghesia dell’epoca, ma letto oggi, fuori dal contesto storico, non rappresenta quel punto di rottura che apparve all’epoca. ( )
Quando Alberto Moravia cominciò a scrivere questo capolavoro, nel 1925, non aveva ancora compiuto diciott'anni. Intorno a lui l'ltalia, alla quale Mussolini aveva imposto la dittatura, stava dimenticando lo scoppio d'indignazione e di ribellione suscitato nel 1924 dal delitto Matteotti e scivolava verso il consenso e i plebisciti per il fascismo. Il giovane Moravia non si interessava di politica, ma il ritratto che fece di un ventenne di allora coinvolto nello sfacelo di una famiglia borghese e dell'intero Paese doveva restare memorabile. Il fascismo eleva l'insidia moderna dell'indifferenza a condizione esistenziale assoluta.
Después de leer esta novela tengo una sensación ambivalente. Por un lado, me ha resultado algo pesada, lenta, opresiva. He imaginado todas las escenas como si fuese el anochecer, me ha irritado la hostilidad latente de todos los personajes entre sí (aunque solo aparecen cinco) y no me han convencido los cambios de humor repentinos y forzados. Pero, por otro lado, admiro la capacidad de Moravia de reproducir el pensamiento de sus personajes, que ven la misma situación cada uno de forma distinta, explorando los motivos que nos llevan a tomar determinadas decisiones. También la abundancia de recursos estilísticos que utiliza con profusión; en especial, recuerdo un momento en que uno de los personajes va a matar a otro, y se va imaginando el juicio correspondiente en forma de guión cinematográfico, lo que remite a las clásicas películas de abogados. Pero el ambiente oscuro y cerrado, la exploración constante de los pensamientos de los personajes, su constante fingimiento, todo eso hace de esta novela un libro oscuro y algo deprimente. Sin duda, es lo que buscaba el autor. ( )
