A historical novel reimagines the life of Anne Morrow Lindbergh, wife of famous aviator Charles and mother of infamously kidnapped baby, Charles, Jr. An engrossing fictionalization of the celebrated couple's marriage.

I'm giving this book 3 stars because I learned a lot about Charles Lindbergh, Anne Morrow Lindbergh and their family. It was well researched. That said, I found the book slow and tedious. The story is told from Anne's point of view, and for most of the book she was a complete doormat. She was admired for her daring adventures, but really she was just doing what she was told. She never once questioned out loud why Charles did things or why he had her do things. Both Anne and Charles seemed determined to maintain the façade of the perfect couple. In some ways, the author was a complete success, she succeeded in making convincingly horrible characters; Charles was a cold, domineering, selfish man, and Anne didn't care as long as Charles occasionally tossed a little praise her way. Rated the nook more on the interesting interpretation of their marriage and their many accomplishments. Although Anne was making herself feel used by Charles, this would have been what live was like in that time frame. The husband had rights, his wishes were done. The fact that Anne had intelligence was her survival. She did what her husband wanted (his lists were crazy) but eventually found a way to be herself (an affair). Before kids, she experienced great aviation accomplishments. His attitude of leaving the children behind fit the idea of the wealthy. Being the quiet type, I could visualize her doing what he said because he showed such confidence. The kidnapping investigation, the not seeing her dead son although he probably did look horrible by then, all fit his personality. Heroes believe they can do no wrong. The press creates this thinking. Wonder what became of the illegitimate children - did they get financial support. Hated the woe is me statements - it made Anne seem weaker than she really was. ( )

This was a little disappointing. I like Melanie Benjamin's work, but here it was not as full or enthralling as I have known it to be. I think there are 2 factors that pin this on me, more than the writer. First of all, it was an audio book, narrated by an "old lady" voice -- sorry to be ageist -- which is appropriate given the flashback format, but grated on me and also made some parts of the book less compelling (e.g. love scenes -- ick) The book opens in 1974 (I was 5 years old!) as Charles Lindbergh is dying. Then Anne proceeds to recount their life together, starting when they met in 1927, with several returns to the present throughout. The second factor is the way Benjamin fictionalizes historical material. I know that's the point and while it helped to put a human face on Anne, I found some of the narration trite and clearly improvised to what someone would say in that situation -- attributing certain comments to the baby, to Anne, to Charles, etc. that were too formulaic and read more like a dimestore novel as a result. Same goes for the unoriginal sky and flying metaphors. And I felt the attempts to justify the Nazi sympathies preceding WWII was forced and empty, at the same time that it tried to be honest and forthright. Hard to take it both ways. I appreciate the scope of Benjamin's task and definitely learned more about Anne Morrow Lindbergh and Charles and their truly amazing accomplishments, but preferred Susan Hertog's biography as being better written. This was an enjoyable enough historical novel, cleverly framed, but I think I was too fresh from reading AML's published diaries to buy in fully to Benjamin's fictionalization. ( )

Our mother was as tightly wound as a bedside clock
Why couldn't confidence be bottled, like perfume?
Mother turned to me with a smile that suddenly crumbled, like a sand castle overwhelmed by an unexpected tide.
"But almost as soon as I landed, I began to feel it—the awful realization that I'm never going to be left alone. People always want more from me, and I don't know what I can give them. I already flew across the ocean."
for the first time I sensed the darker side of accomplishing so much, so young.
