In an unorthodox approach, Georgetown University professor Cal Newport debunks the long-held belief that "follow your passion" is good advice, and sets out on a quest to discover the reality of how people end up loving their careers. Not only are pre-existing passions rare and have little to do with how most people end up loving their work, but a focus on passion over skill can be dangerous, leading to anxiety and chronic job hopping. Spending time with organic farmers, venture capitalists, screenwriters, freelance computer programmers, and others who admitted to deriving great satisfaction from their work, Newport uncovers the strategies they used and the pitfalls they avoided in developing their compelling careers. Cal reveals that matching your job to a pre-existing passion does not matter. Passion comes after you put in the hard work to become excellent at something valuable, not before. In other words, what you do for a living is much less important than how you do it. With a title taken from the comedian Steve Martin, who once said his advice for aspiring entertainers was to "be so good they can't ignore you," Cal Newport's clearly written manifesto is mandatory reading for anyone fretting about what to do with their life, or frustrated by their current job situation and eager to find a fresh new way to take control of their livelihood. He provides an evidence-based blueprint for creating work you love, and will change the way you think about careers, happiness, and the crafting of a remarkable life.… (lisätietoja)

The saying goes, do what you love and the money will follow. I read that more as, follow what you love and the money will do. Professor Newport sets up the premise that chasing your passion's bad advice: People get excited about music or sports, but for most those will never be more than hobbies. He contends that craft trumps passion, but that seems like a shaky enterprise too: In a disrupted economy, even skill's no guarantee of success. He winds up stating the obvious: "Do what people are willing to pay for." Thanks. It's hard enough to understand what we're competent at, much less what we can parlay into something better. Does that take passion or skill? Mostly I think just the curiosity to slog through something worth getting excited about.

"Follow your passion" has always been the advice given to people that I've run into. If you love what you do, good things will follow. This book goes completely against that, and I love it for it. The alternate route to passion is following what you're good at, and what you can make a living at, and let passion follow. The premise is that passion follows expertise, and as you get better at something, your passion for it will increase.

The anecdotal stories told by people who "followed their passion" leading them to change their lifestyle only to realize it wasn't their passion after all were compelling as well. For example dropping everything to join a Buddhist Monastery only to realize it's the wrong life path. I could see a lot of amazing advice in this that could counteract the prevailing culture of bad advice on this same subject. ( )

If you feel stuck or unhappy with your work, this may be the book for you.

The rules in the book are:
#1: Don't follow your passion.
#2: Be so good they can't ignore you (build skills).
#3: Importance of control (get more control over what you do)
#4: Importance of mission

To put these four rules into one, it all comes down to becoming a craftsman - building a set of rare and valuable skills (what the author refers to as career capital). With that, you can move up the career ladder and ask for more control over what you do and how you do it. And with more control, you can invest your career capital into a mission (doing something you find meaningful). And with all that comes passion.

There are some situations where the craftsman mindset doesn’t work.
#1 Job presents few opportunities for gaining skills that are rare and valuable.
#2 Job focuses on something useless or bad for the world
#3 Job forces you to work with people you don’t like.

Basically, start with a job that offers opportunities to gain skills, preferably rare and valuable. Be sure the work gives something useful to the world. And be sure that you work with people you like.

Give yourself to the world instead of selfishly "following your passion" and passion will find you. ( )

I was very excited by this book before I started writing this review, but now I see that many points of this book are quite obvious. That's why I initially rated it 4-star.

But the reason I change it to 5-star is that I think that all people who are the target audience of this book will benefit from reading it. It's an easy read, doable in a week during daily commute and (!!!) is written by a CS professor, not a lifestyle designer (sorry Tim Ferris, or maybe not).

If you're not sure about your next career move, read this book and I hope you won't regret it! ( )
