Also, he was a political and social leader, he was a great thinker. He was a powerful man and vowed to instigate social and political change through nonviolent means. His change was a success during India's prejudicial caste system and winning India's independence from British rule. His teachings inspired Dr. King nonviolent civil rights movement in the United States. Lastly, he inspired Nelson Mandela's anti-apartheid movement in South Africa. At the beginning of the story, he struggled with others because he was shy. Gandhi did not socialize a lot. He was not very good in school as a child and an adult. Later on, he did better himself by studying law and passing his exams. Gandhi had a love for others, he has his own religion/beliefs because he did go through racism. This story about Gandhi was a good experience for me because I have a better understanding of the culture and history outside of America. ( ) This book is for students who are interested in having a better understanding or an open mind to history outside of the United States. Gandhi was not very good in school as a child, according to the beginning of the book. Also struggling socially, he didn't have many, if any, friends. Selfish and egocentric feelings are the blockage to finding true happiness with oneself. After going through racism and hate aimed at him, he's still able to see the brighter side and have love for others. He soon creates his own religion/beliefs. He inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. Gandhi faced down British colonialists with stirring speeches and nonviolent protest and India eventually gained their freedom. This book is about Mohandas Karamchand Gandi. This book is definitely meant for students who have an understanding of historical events outside of America, and an understanding of Indian culture. The illustrations were magnificent showing so much detail and great attention to cultural styles in the artwork itself. The author starts the book with Gandhi as a child who was actually not very good at school and struggled a lot with being social. Throughout his life journey trying to find himself, Gandhi learns that the real truth to happiness is getting rid of selfish feelings and having as much love and respect for others as your do yourself. Gandhi experiences many cases of racism throughout his life, and soon creates his own sets of beliefs, or a religion. He worked as a spokesman for his people against the British who had control over their lands, homes, and people. Gandhi displayed peace, restraint, and patience many times until the problem was resolved and Britain released their grip on India. This book was very informative and definitely was a good experience for me, to learn about a culture outside of my own. I believe the story and pictures would truly captivate a class of students. This nonfiction picture book tells the story of Gandhi's life and accomplishments in simple, accessible language. Demi, the author and illustrator, shows great reverence for her subject and his philosophy of nonviolent resistance (inspired by the Bhagavad Gita). We glimpse Gandhi's shy boyhood, his political awakening as a young lawyer in South Africa, and his extraordinary, decades-long efforts to win Indian independence from Great Britain. The book looks at such milestones as the Hartal (strike) Gandhi led in response to the horrific Amritsar massacre; his subsequent incarceration; the Salt March that mobilized hundreds of thousands; the fast that led to greater civil rights for India's lowest caste; the Hindu-Muslim civil war; India's peacefully won independence; and finally Gandhi's assassination by a fellow Hindu. The book ends on a hopeful note, with a quote from the Bhagavad Gita promising immortality to those who embrace love as their guiding force. The book's illustrations are vibrant and otherworldly; the figures look curiously flat but seem to be floating in the ether (and on every page the ether is a different color). It's a unique, appealing style that I don't recall ever seeing before. Gandhi was a very influential person. He believed that hatred should always be overcome by love. he fought for the rights of those who were oppressed leading up into his assassination. The most powerful act in my opinion would have to be him forgiving the guy who shot him as he was falling to his death. Gandhi was a very powerful and influential leader. ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu
